VWBPE 2013 preparations continue

Later this month VWBPE 2013 will open officially in Second Life on the VWBPE regions. Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education is an open conference event organized by the best educators in Second Life to discuss virtual worlds and technologies. See FAQ for more information. This year the conference will be massive than in previous years and hopefully more visitors will visit this year during the long weekend of interesting educational live presentations.

Work preparations are still going on and now there are about 2 weeks to go until conference starts. Earlier in 2013 the official VWBPE 2013 website was redesigned and today it looks really nice. On the right hand side of the VWBPE 2013 website there are social media links to connect up to get the latest updates. Check out the pages and be part of the conference this year!

  1. How does Convergence Culture (Black Box Fallacy) and Consumer Protection blend into this event?

    Convergence Culture Overview

Henry Jenkins, communications professor at MIT, talks heavily about the ‘Black Box Fallacy’ and how convergence effects older media.

For example Jenkins talks about how ‘Cinema did not kill Theatre or TV did not kill radio’ but rather each medium was ‘Forced to coexist with one another’. Henry also talks about how old media is not being displaced, but it’s status has shifted by the introduction of new technologies. The black box fallacy argument is that all media content will eventually flow through one ‘black box’.

On 15 March, 1962, US President John F. Kennedy delivered an historic address to the US Congress in which he outlined his vision of consumer rights. This was the first time any politician had formerly set out such principles. ‘Consumers by definition, include us all,’ Kennedy said in his Congressional Statement, ‘They are the largest economic group, affecting and affected by almost every public and private economic decision. Yet they are the only important group… whose views are often not heard.’ Over time, the consumer movement has developed this vision into a set of Eight Basic Consumer Rights that now define and inspire much of the work of Consumers International CI and its members do (around areas such as financial services and communications).

  2. Daniel Voyager last week reported that at the NonProfit Commons meeting then, there was an announcement that the VWBPE, Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education, would be holding their sixth annual conference in Second Life in July 2013. Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education is a global grass-roots community event focusing on education in immersive 3D environments. This open “indie”conference is organized by educators to provide an opportunity to showcase the learning that takes place in this community of practice. All educators are encouraged to present, attend and take part in this discussion of collaborative deeper learning and co-presence in virtual worlds and games. The VWBPE event last year took place over several days last March, with numerous events and discussions, such as a dragon parade Gemma Cleanslate covered.
