As we are now in 2024 so it’s time to look back at the past 12 months to see what happened to the overall Second Life grid size during 2023. These statistics below are from the Second Life grid survey which keeps track of daily Second Life economics.
As you can see below most of the grid growth during 2023 came from a big load of new Linden Owned regions which is due to the on-going expansion of the Bellisseria continent in Second Life I believe. Linden Owned regions grew by 330 during 2023 most of which likely came from the Ranch Linden home theme and the latest new Mediterranean Linden home theme.
Private Estates sadly declined by 170 during 2023 if you compare the start and end of the year. I think still the cost of living crisis has had a large impact during 2023 along with other reasons. There have been small amounts of positive net growth through 2023 but it’s not been enough to keep up with the pace of new Linden Owned regions being added.
January 2023 vs December 2023
The main grid total size has showed positive growth during 2023 (+160 regions) from the start of January 2023 to end of December 2023 which is good news generally speaking. Hopefully the grid will keep on growing through 2024 into 2025. It would be good to see Private Estate grow again in 2024/2025 and not decline further under the 18, 000 mark. It is possible that the Linden Owned regions will double this year depending on new Linden home theme releases.

Grid Regions Breakdown January 2020 vs January 2023
Since January 2020 the overall Second Life main grid size has actually seen positive net growth in terms of Private Estates and Linden Owned regions. At the end of 2023 saw the growth trend stop briefly for Private Estates but hopefully during 2024 it will pick up again. The 2024 grid numbers are expected very soon and I will update this blog post with them.

2024: The Next 12 Months
Hopefully we will see more positive net growth during 2024 in Second Life for Private Estates/Linden owned regions. I think the public launch of Second Life Mobile during 2024 will make a positive difference to the grid numbers. We won’t know for sure until later in the year or perhaps early 2025.
