Second Life Private Estates Declining During 2023

According to the latest Second Life region statistics via the Second Life Grid Survey it appears there has been a noticeable decline in Private Estates during 2023. At the start of this year there were 18, 370 private estates on the grid and as of 15th October it’s now gone down to 18, 245 private estates. The cost of living around the world could be having a impact here on the private estate regions in Second Life. If this current trend continues then I would expect Private Estates will drop below 18, 000 by summer 2024. Hopefully things will get better before next summer and that private estates will bounce back.

Since the start of 2023 Linden Owned regions have doubled in size from 9, 289 back in January 2023 to 9, 481 as of 15th October due to the expansion of the Bellisseria continent. I believe more Linden Home sub continents will be added on the grid within the next 3-12 months which will boost up the overall grid numbers. In recent months new development is going on in the SSP development area in Second Life and soon all will be unveiled.

Second Life User Daily Concurrency Levels During September 2023

During September 2023 the Second Life user daily concurrency averaged between 27, 000 (min) to 49, 000 (max). The highest peak for the maximum daily concurrency was 50, 337 recorded on 18th September 2023. The highest peak for August 2023 was 50, 559 recorded on 14th August 2023.

The median daily average for September 2023 averaged was between 35, 000 to 38, 000. The mean daily average for September 2023 was between 35, 000 to 39, 000. The minimum daily concurrency through September 2023 averaged from 27, 000 to 30, 600.

It’s estimated the Second Life daily concurrency numbers should start going up as we head into the autumn/winter months ahead especially around Christmas/new year period. During 2023 so far the daily concurrency has not really surpassed the 55, 000 mark and has remained pretty flat all year with no huge peaks that are noticeable.

Last year the daily concurrency max averaged around the 55, 000 mark at peak times from January 2022 to March 2022. From April 2022 to May 2022 it dropped slightly to 53, 000 then dropped to 51, 000 for the rest of 2022.

  • 55, 737 was the highest peak for Maximum Daily Concurrency – 5th February 2022

2023

This year it’s reaching the 50, 000 mark but not as much as it used to be in previous years. At the start of 2023 it averaged 53, 000 at peak times until the summer months where it’s averaging around the 49, 000 mark at peak times. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues for the rest of 2023 into 2024.

Second Life User Daily Concurrency Levels During August 2023

During August 2023 the Second Life user daily concurrency levels averaged between 45, 000 to 49, 000 at peak times (maximum) with the highest peak of 50, 559 on 14th August 2023. The minimum daily concurrency averaged from 27, 000 to 30, 000 during August 2023.

The median daily average for August 2023 averaged was between 35, 000 to 40, 000. The mean daily average for August 2023 was between 35, 000 to 39, 000.

I would imagine the Second Life daily user daily concurrency levels will start rising again as we head into the Autumn and Winter months which is the normal seasonal trends. I don’t think the maximum peak will reach 55, 000+ this year. Maybe in 2024 there might be more interest that will increase the user daily concurrency levels in Second Life.

The Second Life user daily concurrency levels were much higher back from 2020 – 2022 slightly like wise with 2008 – 2009 when it reached 60k – 88k at peak times. Today it’s not really reaching 55, 000 to 60, 000 at peak times. Check out my Second Life stats for historical stats and more.

Second Life Shows Positive Net Region Growth – August 2023 Update

Since the start of July 2023 there has been more positive net growth for regions in Second Life which is really good news. The growth has come mostly from Linden Owned regions with the expansion of the Ranch regions which is starting to form a small/medium continent. More Linden owned regions have been recently been joining the Ranch area on a regular basis which is increasing the total amount of Linden Owned regions.

There has been good news for Private Estates as it’s been growing over the past month from 18, 330 to 18, 354 regions. It’s not the highest it’s been though this year because there was 18, 370 on 1st January 2023. Hopefully with more growth it may reach or surpass the amount it was at the start of 2023.

The total land area of Second Life now stands at 1820.33(KM).

Second Life Main Grid size as of 13th August 2023

  • Total Regions: 27, 776
  • Private Estates: 18, 354
  • Linden Owned: 9, 422

Second Life Main Grid size on 2nd July 2023

  • Total Regions: 27, 690
  • Private Estates: 18, 330
  • Linden Owned: 9, 360

Second Life Main Grid size as of 1st January 2023

  • Total Regions: 27, 659
  • Private Estates: 18, 370
  • Linden Owned: 9, 289

Hopefully there will be more positive net growth in regions for the last four months of 2023 in Second Life. It’s been a steady year for the main grid so far in 2023 but the overall trend is that Second Life is still growing after 20 years operating. I think the next few years at least may be pretty challenging depending on the real world economic situation like with the cost of living etc.

Second Life Grid Statistics – July 2023 Update

These are the latest Second Life grid statistics as of 2nd July 2023 via the Second Life Grid Survey which tracks the current economic stats of Second Life. There are four areas of focus here from the size of the Main Grid, the daily user concurrency levels, signups and website traffic on the Second Life website.

Main Grid Size

Since my last report back in late March 2023 there has been positive net growth in Private Estates and Linden Owned regions which is really good news. The main grid of Second Life has been steadily been growing since the start of 2023. See below for the growth of regions so far.

Most of the growth since March 2023 has come from Linden Owned regions relating to the expansion of the Bellisseria continent in Second Life. There have been a big increase in new regions mainly Newbrooke and Sakura regions since March. Within the past week more Ranch regions have been added and more are due to arrive soon.

Private Estates are growly again but slowly at the moment. It’s dropped slightly since the start of 2023 but hopefully growth will return again soon. I think the lab needs to come up with ways to get the interest back for owning private estates.

It appears for the amount of Private Estates that are going offline the lab adds more Linden Owned regions. More Linden Owned regions are coming at some point. K

Last month Tyche Shepherd reported positive net growth in private regions. Second Life is still growing after 20 years being online. Hopefully the growth trend will continue for the rest of 2023/2024.

Daily Second Life User Concurrency Levels

Since my past report back in March 2023 it appears there has been a slight decline in the daily Second Life user concurrency levels. I think this is mostly due to the summer season which follows the annual patterns. It’s expected the Second Life user daily concurrency levels will pick up again in the autumn winter months.

I don’t think there will be any major record breaking maximum peaks until the end of 2023. I think once Second Life Mobile goes public sometime in 2024 there could be positive new peaks happening.

Second Life Signups

There has been at least 200, 000 new residents that have signed up to Second Life in seven months since the start of 2023 if these stats are correct via Second Life Grid Survey.

  • 67, 328, 431 – Total Resident Signups To Date – 2nd July 2023
  • 67, 055, 911 – On 1st January 2023

Second Life Website Traffic

According to Similarweb which tracks website traffic Second Life had 11 million total visits for the month of May 2023. From March 2023 to April 2023 Second Life website had 10.7 million total visits apparently. For June 2023 there were 10.6 million visits to the Second Life website.

Over the last three months secondlife.com global ranking has increased from 4, 675 to 4, 426. The average rate of visit duration on the Second Life website is roughly 11 minutes. The United States (51%) and the United Kingdom (6.4%) had a larger share of the total visits.

My next statistics post will be published on my blog in October 2023. If anything changes before then I’ll blog it.
