Linden Lab Gives Statement On Serious Allegations

On Wednesday 20th March 2024 Brad Oberwager, Linden Lab’s Executive Chairman made a public statement to the Second Life community via the Second Life official blog saying that Linden Lab has been investigating allegations posted to social media recently and that the investigation is still ongoing. There were accusations that some Lindens and Moles were engaged in ageplay (sexualized) and that there were toxic internal company operations going on.

There was a shocking and distressing article on Medium called The Reality of Second Life’s Ageplay Program (posted 25th February I believe) which is archived online via Wayback Machine. There was no statement for weeks that followed the Medium article until everyone saw changes to the About page on the official Linden Lab website where the management section went down for some time.

There has been radio silence from the lab since the end of February until this week when the lab finally decided to make this public statement. The investigation could take weeks or months to be completed in the right way. I hope the results will be published in full to the Second Life community.

The lab are most likely following strict legal advice going forward and there will be major changes to the TOS very soon. I think the lab will get much stricter on acceptable behaviour, ageplay, sexual rules, community standards and more. I think all those that are responsible for this should be punished and banned from Second Life. I think there needs to be significant internal changes now at the lab and new measures to be brought forward to protect people using Second Life.

The lab response to the allegations…

At the heart of the blog post were unsettling accusations about sexualized, virtual avatar ageplay, including alleged violations of our community guidelines. I want to be clear: we have a zero-tolerance policy against sexualized ageplay. The safety and integrity of the Second Life platform are paramount to us, especially concerning the protection of minors“.

The investigation stage…

There has been anger and a lot of confusion within the Second Life community in recent days and weeks about whats happened. Brad Oberwager the current owner of Linden Lab has now “initiated a thorough investigation, both internally and with external partners, to review whether or not there have been any violations of our company and community policies by employees, contractors, or community members. While early preliminary internal investigations suggest that some of the accusations are unfounded, I want to make sure that we get additional investigative support externally to ensure that the process is fair and thorough“.

Brad is now taking proactive steps going forward mentioning that “Additionally, I am taking proactive steps to review and revamp many of our policies, including a comprehensive review of our Community StandardsContent Guidelines, and Ageplay Policy. Any violation detected will be met with swift enforcement actions to protect our community. We’ll be sharing these revised policies in the coming weeks and, critically, we are turning to the community to help us shape the future of how governance operates within Second Life“.

It’s good that the lab finally officially acknowledged this but there was a long wait for the statement. I’m sure we will hear more from the lab very soon.

Two New SL21B Build Regions Added On The Grid

Two new SL21B Build regions have appeared on the grid as of 17th March 2024 according to the Second Life Grid Survey.

I would imagine that early preparations and early development has already started. It will be interesting to watch the region transformations take place soon.

SL21B known as Second Life 21st Birthday will take place mid June until early July 2024. The lab have not yet set the official dates for the annual Second Life birthday celebrations.

I would imagine the lab will blog about SL21B within the next month or so. I will blog more when I hear more.

Second Life is implementing support for WebRTC Voice

Linden Lab have officially announced that Second Life is now implementing support for WebRTC Voice. This means that there will be greater control of Voice from Second Life, improved security along with higher quality audio for voice.

This removes external dependency on third party providers for voice and it’s a simpler setup from behind firewalls including private networks.

Here are some of the WebRTC features including audio device selection, stereo audio, noise reduction, automatic gain control, echo cancellation and more.

The lab are still taking feedback on WebRTC and deployed of this will be happening to  beta regions in Second Life very soon. The lab are looking forward to when WebRTC Voice becomes more available grid wide and becomes supported in the default Second Life viewer.

The rollout is expected to happen in Q2 2024 roughly end of April 2024 depending on progress.

Upcoming New Features

As mentioned in the blog post the lab are working on teleports and avatar improvements like skeleton deformers.

There are more new features planned and there has been alot of feature suggestions for the Second Life mobile app which are being worked on now.

Future Developments

The lab are working on a whole range of improvements and new features right now which is going to take more time I think. The lab have not officially given any estimates on when the beta phrase might start or any public launch timeframe.

Good progress has been made in the alpha phrase since the start of 2024 and the lab hopes there will be more alpha builds soon.

My rough guess is that the beta phrase may start in June which would be good timing for  the start of the SL21B annual birthday celebrations. Maybe a public launch in late summer/late 2024.

In the mean time it’s best to send feedback back to Linden Lab and watch out for future blog mobile news updates.

SpeedLight v32 To Be Released This Week

The SpeedLight team have officially announced SpeedLight v32 update which is due to be released this week. The release will be ready to download on the Apple Store and Google Play very soon. The new SpeedLight v32 comes with loads of new improvements, fixes and new features. The mobile experience has been improved and runs smoother.

It’s good that the SpeedLight team are improving the mobile experience regularly and currently offers slightly more features. I guess the lab have some catching up to do. Second Life mobile is still in the alpha phrase currently. Once Second Life mobile launches to the public later in 2024 then there will be competition I’m sure.

Here is the full announcement via Discord group channel…

Announcement: SpeedLight v32 🍃

Good news @everyone! SpeedLight v32 update is to be released this week! Here’s the brief list of upcoming new features and improvements:

🗣️ New: IM Autoresponder Rules
You can automate your business messaging by setting up keyword rules IM Autoresponder. If someone sends you an IM containing a keyword, your avatar will send an automatic response. This may happen when you in “Away” state or every time.
(❤️ the feature is available for Patrons already – https://www.patreon.com/posts/rule-im-for-100289805)

🔍 Searching people, groups and land
In-world search made better and more precise. It uses Second Life native search (in contrary to a quite glitchy “Search all”).

⛓️ Massive RLV Update
We added a support for a bunch of new RLV devices. Added support for Whim RLV and HUD. Added teleport and forced teleport support. Fixed sitting/standing animation and other problems.

🚀 Online stability of SpeedLight
We did a great system update in January-February, making SpeedLight truly stable! Avatars do not crash or fall offline anymore. This is a very important improvement for all of us since all we want our avis to be online 24/7!

⚙️ Other fixes
Finally, we did a lot of fixes under the hood. Mobile experience is smoother now, the “Away” status detection is working in a reliable way… and more!

Stay tuned for an update release soon!
