On June 23rd 2003 Second Life was launched officially by Linden Lab and today Second Life turns 15 years old. Second Life is still one of the best virtual worlds out there today and still going strong.
The party celebrations are still happening over at the SL15B regions with live music around the clock and great exhibitions to see. It’s one of the biggest events on the grid happening now 🙂
Ebbe Linden announced a new pricing announcement live at SL15B community celebrations today. A big surprise announcement!
The monthly maintenance fees on Private Estates are dropping by up to 15% and the one-time land set-up fees will be reducing as much as 41%. These new pricing changes come into effect from 2nd July 2018 which is now just a few weeks away.
These discounts are not available for grandfathered/bought down land prices.
Current vs New Pricing Changes
Linden Dollars Increasing
The cost to buy Linden Dollars will be increasing to US $1.49 per transaction (compared to the current rate of 99 cents per transaction). Linden Lab are trying to attempt to re-balance the revenue the company makes through the Second Life platform. This increase will help Linden Lab offset the revenues lost on land.
On Tuesday 19th June a brand new video was uploaded on the official Second Life YouTube channel featuring Ebbe Altberg (Ebbe Linden) who is the CEO of Linden Lab celebrating 15 years of Second Life. The video runs for 2 minutes and 34 seconds.
Second Life the most successful virtual world ever
Ebbe is speaking in the video from Amsterdam which is great. Ebbe mentioned that 68 million US dollars was paid to creators in 2017. 5 million virtual goods listed in the marketplace. Linden Lab are moving massive amounts of infrastructure into the cloud.
At the end of the video there is a special surprise appearance from the founder of Second Life Philip Rosedale. Second Life 15 years later is still going strong and I agree Second Life is definitely the most successful virtual world out there today.
On Monday 18th June Linden Lab announced some exciting Second Life 15th birthday events upcoming. Second Life will officially turn 15 years old on Saturday 23rd June 2018 and there will be big celebrations to make this special occasion.
It’s great to see the lab hosting a series of events for SL15B (see below) and I think this year will be the best Second Life birthday ever.

A new interesting SL15B Infographic has just been sent to me to share with everyone from Linden Lab. This new infographic was created in preparation for the 15th anniversary celebration of Second Life happening in June 2018.
This new Infographic shows the total number of Second Life accounts there have been, the total time users have spent in Second Life. new registrations, virtual goods created in the marketplace, chat messages sent daily and the most popular categories on the Second Life Destination Guide.

This week Linden Lab announced fifteen reasons to celebrate Second Life 15th birthday which takes place in mid June 2018. On the list there was mention about the return of last names which is expected to go live in late 2018. Before then there are many things that have to be fixed on the back-end before last names can return again.
Apparently the plan is to allow people to change their first and last name whenever they want to. Users will be able to select their last name from a pre-set list of available names like the old system before
Unicode will not be supported when entering a first name
Once a name is used it cannot ever be reused again
The first and last name will not replace Display Names
The pre-set list with last names will regularly be changed to keep the fresh and the lab are thinking about last name suggestions from the Second Life community later this year.
There will be a cost to change your name if you wish to do that. The fee costs have not been confirmed yet
These new investments include improved Second Life infrastructure, better Premium subscriptions, new Windlight extensions, new grid wide gaming experience and extensions to the animation system. See below for the full details!
Here are a few of the things you can look forward to soon:
We are hard at work upgrading all of the SL infrastructure and moving it to the cloud, which will bring a wealth of opportunities to Residents near and far, and allow us, among many other things, to make SL more performant for Residents across the world from us. It may also allow us to introduce new products with more flexible pricing.
We’re working on several features to increase the value of Premium subscriptions. Most recently we gave Premium members priority access to near-full events, and shortly, we’ll be ready to unveil another bit of exciting news for subscribers.
We’re building out a series of great extensions to Windlight (code name: EEP!), which will give value, flexibility, and new marketability to land, and will make Windlight settings tradeable assets.
We have an extension to the animation system in the works (code name: Animesh) that will allow non-avatar objects to use more powerful and efficient skeletal animations the way avatars can today, and even more changes planned for creators and merchants later in the year.
We’ve also got new experiences and events coming. An exciting new grid-wide gaming experience is coming soon! The team can’t wait to share the details with you in just a few days. Also in the works for this fall is an updated Halloween Haunted Tour, with new spooktacular events to celebrate. Not to mention, we’re turning 15 next year – SL15B, baby! That’s an incredible milestone and we are looking forward to collaborating with you to produce an amazing celebration.
It’s great to see Linden Lab are still improving Second Life for the better. This is proof that Second Life is here to stay for many more years to come.
Dear Second Life Residents,
It’s been an exciting summer at Linden Lab. Second Life celebrated its 14th anniversary, and shortly thereafter we also opened Sansar’s creator beta to the world. In addition, we are thrilled to announce a set of investments into Second Life and its communities that will include enhancements to our engineering support, customer support, billing systems and upgrades, and customer acquisition outreach. In all, we’ve budgeted many millions (USD, not L$…) in the coming year to make SL even better, and we’ll keep everyone up to date on improvements as they roll out (or sooner).
This summer’s milestones have given us all another opportunity to reflect on just how strong the Second Life community is, what an incredible history SL has had so far, and what an amazing future lies ahead for the virtual world and its Residents.
For more than 14 years, you’ve created memorable experiences, diverse communities, close relationships, thriving economies, engaging art, exciting events, and amazing creations of all kinds. You’ve made the world, and we’re proud to provide the platform and tools that help you to do so. We at Linden continue to be impressed by what we witness from Residents every day, and we want you to know that we share that commitment to and love for Second Life.
I agree 15 years will be an incredible milestone next year and I’m so glad I’ve been around for ten years in Second Life. Yay 🙂
