Good news to start 2023 of with is that Second Life has been positively been growing since 2021. During the past few years Private Estates have increased by at least one thousand regions and Linden Owned regions have increased by at least 500 regions.
Hopefully region growth will continue though 2023 and I will be blogging any major changes during the yeah ahead. Stay tuned for those updates in (March, June, September and December 2023) on my blog.
Below are the region counts from 2021, 2022 and now 2023. More growth in 2022 it appears and hopefully there will be growth in 2023/2024. It’s not known if 2023 will any easier than 2022 was with the cost of living going up globally (risk of another recession). We will have to wait and see what happens.

I will be blogging about Second Life user concurrency levels from 2022 shortly.
I reported back in July 2022 on my blog that the Second Life grid been growing steadily since the start of 2022 and that at least 300 new regions were added this year. It seems the positive 2022 growth for Second Life has briefly ended by this week’s grid numbers. Hopefully this will be just a blip moment and the rebound growth will come back again soon.
Since the end of July 2022 it appears the Main Grid has lost roughly 200 regions and if another 100+ regions go offline before the end of September 2022 then the grid will end up being what it was at the start of 2022 roughly. The loss came mainly from Private Estates it appears and from the loss of SSP development regions in early August 2022.

Second Life Grid Survey Data
There is no need to panic yet unless the it goes under the 27, 000 mark for the total number of main grid regions in Second Life or it goes under the 18, 000 mark for Private Estates. Even then Second Life continues as normal and remains pretty healthy in the economy.
Inflation is a big worry going forward over the next 3-6 months+ and I hope this is not the start of a huge decline for Second Life again after positive net growth in recent years or so. Challenging times ahead maybe.

This is the October 2021 Update on the latest Second Life Grid Statistics including region stats, daily concurrency stats and Second Life website traffic. It’s hard to believe there are just a few months left of 2021. My next grid statistics blog post will be published end of December 2021.
Second Life Regions
Since the end of September 2021 Second Life has continued to show positive net growth from 27, 220 on 26th September 2021 to 27, 284 as of 24th October 2021. Private Estate growth has slowly slightly while there is a big increase in Linden Owned regions in recent weeks. Linden owned regions count was 8, 867 on 26th September and now it’s gone up to 8, 934 as of 24th October 2021.
At the end of 2020 there was 25, 614 regions in total in Second Life. Since then the grid has showed positive net growth for Private Estates and Linden Owned regions. There has been more interest this year it appears which is very good news for the lab.

The growth of Linden owned regions is mainly due to the expansion of the Bellisseria continent from the east side of the chalet sub continent and west/north side of the new fantasy sub continent. This is set to rise further in the next 6 to 12 months as more Linden home themes are being either worked on now or being planned soon.
The next Linden home theme will probably be announced at the 2021 SL Christmas Expo happening from 3rd to 14th December 2021.
Second Life Daily Concurrency
The daily Second Life user concurrency is staying stable at the moment with no major maximum peaks during the past month or so. The daily user concurrency seems to be averaging between 30, 000 at non-peak to 54, 000 at peak. At the start of 2021 the daily peak levels were slightly higher with 57, 000 (average) inworld and as the year has gone on it’s dropped down.
I would expect the Second Life daily user concurrency to rise again slightly during the winter (2021) and into early spring 2022 as everyone normally stays inside. Something between 34, 000 to 58, 000 I predict in the winter months.
Daily User Concurrency Levels – October 2021
Maximum Daily Concurrency: 48, 000 to 54, 000 (average)
Median Daily Concurrency: 38, 000 to 42, 000 (average)
Minimum Daily Concurrency: 30, 000 to 32, 000 (average)
Second Life Website Traffic
Here are the latest Second Life website traffic stats below for September 2021. These are numbers are reported on similarweb which tracks secondlife.com traffic.
11 million visits – (global rank 3, 605)
Average visit duration – 10mins / 59seconds
Pages per visit – 13.12
United States 45.89% + United Kingdom 6.13% (most website traffic)
95.51% organic searches / 4.49% paid searches to secondlife.com
> Second Life registered accounts data is no longer available anymore.
Here are the latest Second Life grid statistics as of Sunday 26th September 2021 via the Second Life Grid Survey. Since early July 2021 Second Life is still showing strong positive growth in new Private Estates and new Linden Owned regions. This is very good news and hopefully this positive upward trend will continue for many more months to come.
It’s gone from 24, 147 total main grid regions on 20th January 2020 to 27, 220 on 26th September 2021. Wow! 🙂
Most of the recent region growth has come from the new Fantasy sub continent which opened in early August 2021 where hundreds of new regions were added on the grid. It’s expected hundreds of more Linden home regions (new themes) will be added within the next 12 months or so.
If the total main grid regions count surpasses 28, 000 then it would be like 2012/2013 levels again which would be great to see. If it reaches 29, 000 or 30, 000 then that would be amazing.

My next Second Life Grid Statistics blog post will be published in late October 2021.
We are now six months into 2021 and it’s time to look back at the Second Life daily concurrency levels so far this year. As you can see in the graph above 2021 has been mostly been steady in terms of the daily active users in Second Life with no major high peaks. There have been various drops in the overall active users counts due grid issues though.
At the start of the year I did think the daily maximum count may surpass the 60, 000 mark but that has not happened yet. It got closer to the 60, 000 mark back in late March 2021 and you know there could be a good chance it may happen later this year.

To keep track of the Second Life Main Grid Stats see here. There is real time data of inworld online users and the exchange rate worth checking out. The Second Life registered users data stopped working back on 21st October 2020 showing 64, 687, 961 total resident signups.
Second Life Grid Size
Since the start of 2021 Second Life has been growing steadily in terms of the size of the main grid. Private Estates has shown positive net growth this year which is good to see. Linden owned regions have been growing throughout 2021 which is due to the lab adding new Linden Homes. Yay! 🙂

Later this month the Second Life platform turns 18 years old and at the moment the metrics look good. Hopefully the metrics will show even more growth during 2021 into 2022. It’s really good seeing the Second Life grid growing and not declining like in the early 2010s.
Private Estates weekly net change for 2020 – Source: Tyche Shepherd
Tyche Shepherd has posted some interesting grid numbers on Twitter for 2020 on Sunday 3rd January 2021. Apparently 2020 was a busy time for the Second Life grid as it grew from 24, 740 regions at the start of 2020 to 25, 555 regions as of today (+3.3%). The growth was mainly driven by private regions up from 16, 105 to 17, 024 (+5.7%) as of today. Linden owned regions declined from 8, 635 to 8, 531 as of today.
As you can see from the graphs on this blog post there were actually small positive rises of new private estates during the first quarter of 2020. Between April 2020 and May 2020 there was positive growth in private estates. During June 2020 and July 2020 there was a short lived decline happening until August 2020 where the grid showed positive growth steadily. In September 2020 and October 2020 private estates dropped. Since early November 2020 private estates have been showing positive grid growth again up to the last week of 2020 where a sudden decline occurred.
Since 27th December 2020 there has been a loss of 59 private regions in Second Life but hopefully things will improve during 2021. Linden Lab is currently unable to offer new regions again. This is not caused by falling demand or interest. Lets hope the lab can sort out the land store issue within the next few weeks.
The Land Store will be undergoing unscheduled maintenance. New Private Region sales have been temporarily placed on hold. We are sorry for the inconvenience!
Tyche Shepherd tweet update for 2020…
Happy New Year 2020 was a busy time for the #secondlife grid It grew from 24740 regions to 25555 (+3.3%) – The growth driven by private regions (up from 16105 to 17024 +5.7%) Linden owned fell from 8635 to 8531 pic.twitter.com/O9nc2wIMhe
Second Life Main Grid Size – 27th December 2020 vs 3rd January 2021
Outlook for 2021
Hopefully the lab will sort out the land store issue and then normal service will resume in terms of new region sales before the end of January 2021. It would be great to see Private Estates and Linden Owned regions increase more during 2021 without too many bumps happening.
