Second Life User Daily Concurrency – March 2023 Update

The Second Life user daily concurrency levels for March 2023 so far have been averaging between 28, 000 (min) to 52, 000 (max). The levels seem to be stable at the moment with the median figure between 36, 000 to 43, 000. It’s expected that the concurrency levels will drop slightly during the summer months and then rise in the winter like in previous years. We will have to see what happens this year.

* Will it surpass 55, 000 or 60, 000 at peak during 2023 ? It’s not reached these levels for some time. It can happen though with enough interest and commitment staying logged into Second Life.

March 2023 Second Life User Daily Concurrency Levels – as of 13th March

  • Maximum: 46, 000 to 52, 000 – (average)
  • Median: 36, 000 to 43, 000 – (average)
  • Minimum: 28, 000 to 30, 000 – (average)

Data supplied from the Second Life Grid Survey. I will post more updates as 2023 goes on.

Second Life Daily User Concurrency Drops Slightly Since May 2022

The Second Life daily user concurrency has dropped slightly since May 2022 it appears. At the start of 2022 the maximum for online users was averaging around the 55, 000 mark and during the past month or so it’s been averaging around the 51, 000 mark.

I don’t think we will see the daily user Second Life concurrency reaching 60, 000 this year unless something big happens. I think the maximum peak levels could average between 54, 000 to 57, 000 in the winter months.

August 2022 Update

  • Maximum (average): 49, 000 – 51, 000
  • Average (average): 38, 000 – 40, 000
  • Minimum (average): 27, 000 – 32, 000

It’s nothing much to worry about at the moment as this is the 2022 summer period where the yearly average drops abit until the winter months where the daily concurrency numbers normally start rising again.

I will be keeping a closer eye on the Second Life user concurrency levels during the last four months of 2022 and I will certainly blog again if any noticeable changes happen.

Past Year

Past year user concurrency levels

Past 60 Days

The past 60 days seem to be following the same trends between 27, 000 (min) to 51, 000 (max) for the daily user concurrency levels in Second Life.

I will publish my next Second Life Statistics blog post in October 2022. Stay turned for that.

Second Life Grid Statistics – April 2021 Update

We are now four months into 2021 and it’s time to look at the latest Second Life grid statistics to see what’s going on.

New: Traffic Lights

  • Green: Stats showing positive growth
  • Orange: Stats remaining stable / possible rise soon
  • Red: Decline in the stats / data stopped

Second Life Regions

Good news is that the Second Life grid is showing positive net growth at the moment. Most of the growth is coming from the expansion of the Bellisseria continent with new Linden owned regions being added. As many know already the lab connected the Bellisseria continent with Satori continent.

The Second Life land store is open which is making a positive difference now to the grid numbers overall. There has been more interest in private estates since the end of 2020 which is fantastic news. Let’s hope this positive trend will continue for the rest of 2021 and into 2022.

The Second Life grid size as of 11th April 2021

  • Total Main Grid Regions: 26, 504
  • Private Estates: 17, 864
  • Linden Owned: 8, 640
  • Total Area: 1736.97 (KM)

As of 28th February 2021

  • Total Main Grid Regions: 25, 729
  • Private Estates: 17, 302
  • Linden Owned: 8, 427

Back on 27th December 2020

  • Total Main Grid Regions: 25, 614
  • Private Estates: 17, 084
  • Linden Owned: 8, 531

Second Life Daily Concurrency

The Second Life daily concurrency levels have remained steady since the start of 2021. There have not been any huge peaks in the maximum daily concurrency yet. The highest recorded so far for 2021 was on 29th March 2021 with 57, 767 residents online.

It would be nice to see the daily concurrency surpass 60, 000 in the months ahead. Between March 2020 and May 2020 the daily average maximum Second Life user concurrency stayed around the 60, 000 mark.

April 2021 Daily Concurrency Stats

  • Maximum Daily Concurrency: 51, 000 to 57, 000
  • Median Daily Concurrency: 41, 000 to 45, 000
  • Minimum Daily Concurrency: 31, 000 to 34, 000

Second Life Signups

It seems that the Second Life Grid Survey no longer publishes daily metrics for Resident Signups to date. The last update was made on 21st October 2020 with 64, 687, 961 total residents.

This was a useful metric to see the population growth in Second Life and hopefully the data feeds will resume soon.

Second Life Website Traffic

It appears that during February 2021 SecondLife.com traffic dropped to 9.4 million visits. Back in December 2020 it peaked at 12.7 million visits. During March 2021 the website traffic increased to 11 million visits. I would imagine the website traffic will increase in the months ahead.

My next Second Life grid statistics will be published in July 2021.

Main Grid Regions Statistics – March 2021 Update

Here are the latest Second Life main Grid region statistics for the past week ending Sunday 28th February 2021 via the Second Life Grid Survey.

As of 28th February 2021

  • Total Main Grid Regions: 25, 729
  • Private Estates: 17, 302
  • Linden Owned: 8, 427

Back on 27th December 2020

  • Total Main Grid Regions: 25, 614
  • Private Estates: 17, 084
  • Linden Owned: 8, 531

In the past week there was an increase of 138 regions on the Second Life grid which is very positive news. 131 were private estates and 7 were Linden owned regions. This recent increase of regions on the grid could be to do with the reopening of the Land Store which has been open for a week. But it could be to do with lockdowns around the world where many people may have spare money saved up to purchase new land in Second Life.

The total area of all regions in Second Life is now 1686.18 square kilometers. That’s still a big area to explore and here is the classification breakdown of the regions as of 28th February 2021…

  • Moderate regions rose to 15,936 (+79)
  • Adult regions rose to 7,172 (+71)
  • General regions rose to 2,613 (+1)

Since 27th December 2020 private estates have grew by 219 regions so far. There has been a loss of 104 regions on the grid. Overall the grid has gained 115 regions this year. Hopefully the growth trends will continue throughout 2021.

Second Life shows positive grid growth during 2020

Main Grid Size as of 27th December 2020

Since the start of 2020 Second Life has steadily increased it’s overall grid size in terms of regions which is very good news indeed. The total area of all regions as of 27th December 2020 is 1678.64 square kilometres. That’s still a big amount to say the least.

Good news is that both Linden Owned and Private Estates have showed signs of positive net growth this year. Yay! 🙂

Main Grid Size on 27th December 2020

  • Total: 25, 614
  • Linden Owned: 8, 531
  • Private Estates: 17, 083

Interest for private estates has increased more in recent weeks (over 300 private estates) since Linden Lab announced that private estates were back available again in limited quantity and I think it’s back to normal now. Hopefully during 2021 there will be more interest in private estates in Second Life which would be a good thing.

Linden Lab have added hundred’s of new Linden owned regions during the course of 2020 expanding the Bellisseria continent eastwards with Linden themed style homes including victorian homes, log homes and stilt homes. The Moles have worked so hard in building new regions and then rolling it out to the public via the QA process as fast as possible. Great work! 🙂

Main Grid Size on 20th January 2020

  • Total: 24, 147
  • Linden Owned: 8, 111
  • Private Estates: 16, 036

Linden Owned8111171559124840531.56
Private Estates1603611159147576951050.94

More Linden home regions are coming during 2021 which will be exciting I’m sure for the Second Life community as there is still a big demand for Linden Homes. Chalet Linden homes will be released in first part of 2021 followed by new Linden theme releases later.

Every year events like Relay for Life of Second Life, Garden Expo, Second Life birthday and other big events do effect the grid numbers for a short time. There is a surge in regions then a sudden decline once the event is over. The grid statistics are updated every week on the Second Life Grid Survey.

I hope the Second Life grid will continue to grow in size in the new year and beyond that. Linden Lab main focus is on Second Life nowadays adding more improvements and features. I will blog about the grid statistics at various times during 2021. Stay tuned for that.

Second Life Region Statistics – September 2020 Update

As of Monday 21st September 2020 these are the latest grid region numbers for the size of the Second Life main grid. For the past three weeks the grid has been steadily growing. In general terms Second Life is relatively stable for regions at the moment with the total being just over the 25, 000 regions mark.

  • Total: 25, 011
  • Private Estates: 16, 715
  • Linden Owned: 8, 296

Since 29th December 2019 there has been an increase of 610 private estate regions and a loss of 339 regions on the main grid. The grid has actually gained a total of 271 regions during 2020 so far.

The Second Life Grid Survey is still the best place to view the latest Second Life grid numbers. Tyche Shepherd has not shared her personal analysis of the grid numbers since May 2020 via the VirtualVerse Forums page. The weekly statistics were most interesting and I hope Tyche will resume posting soon.

Second Life Statistics Update – June 2020

We are now six months into 2020 and it’s now time to look at the latest Second Life grid statistics. The key areas of focus is the main grid size, daily concurrency and signups.

Main Grid Size

The good news is that the total size of the main grid has grown since the start of the year. There has been more interest in private estates this year. Linden Lab have added more new Linden owned regions to the Bellisseria continent during the past six months. The YTD net loss for private estate regions has stayed pretty low at around 0.4% since March 2020.

In mid May 2020 the lab announced that there was limited availability of new Second Life regions going forward. It’s likely that things may pick up again in early Autumn 2020. Second Life is in the process of migrating from the old existing dedicated servers to a cloud hosting service. When that process is complete the lab will release the unlimited region capacity again.

Unfortunately, our current server systems cannot accommodate unlimited growth without adversely impacting that stability and performance. This means that region inventory in Second Life will be extremely limited and may not be readily available until early fall.

For those that follow Tyche Shepherd weekly posts on VirtualVerse Forums there has not been no weekly updates since 30th March 2020 on the latest grid numbers. Note that stats on this blog post are from the Second Life Grid Survey and from the VirtualVerse Forums.

The average daily concurrency for Second Life at the moment is between 30, 000min- 55, 000max at peak times. The maximum daily concurrency has not surpassed 60, 000 since late April 2020. During the past few months there has been more logging into Second Life probably due to the current health crisis the world is facing now.

  • Maximum Daily Concurrency – 55, 000 (average peak)
  • Median Daily Concurrency – 40, 400 (average)
  • Minimum Daily Concurrency – 30, 000 (average)

Signups

As of the 12th of June 2020 there have been 63, 734, 666 signups for Second Life since launch of the platform.

My next statistics update will be made in late October 2020.
