Second Life Main Grid Regions – March 2023 Update

Since the start of January 2023 it appears the Second Life Main Grid total size has slightly declined again according to the Second Life Grid Survey economic metrics (as of 19th March). The cost of living (higher inflation) could be affecting these grid numbers now and the stats could get worse/better in the months ahead.

Private Estates in Second Life have dropped by over 50 regions since January 2023. This decline could be worrying if this continues for the next three months. Hopefully we will see some positive net growth soon in Private Estates.

Linden Owned regions have been steadily been increasing this year. No major theme releases so far for Linden Hones (it’s been quiet lately). More Linden Owned regions are expected to arrive through 2023 over at the Bellisseria continent.

Maybe more growth could come from SL20B scheduled for mid June where I’m sure there will be more press about Second Life. SL Mobile launch later this year may bring in tons of new residents. The lab could help with land costings with more benefits for Premium Plus members.

Second Life Main Grid size as of 19th March 2023.

  • Total Regions: 27, 617
  • Private Estates: 18, 324

Next update will be published in June 2023 on my blog to see what’s changed during the first 6 months of 2023.

What are your predictions for 2023 in terms of the grid region numbers ? Feel free to comment below.

Second Life Daily Concurrency Levels – January 2021 to May 2021

2021 daily concurrency levels highlighted in blue

We are now six months into 2021 and it’s time to look back at the Second Life daily concurrency levels so far this year. As you can see in the graph above 2021 has been mostly been steady in terms of the daily active users in Second Life with no major high peaks. There have been various drops in the overall active users counts due grid issues though.

At the start of the year I did think the daily maximum count may surpass the 60, 000 mark but that has not happened yet. It got closer to the 60, 000 mark back in late March 2021 and you know there could be a good chance it may happen later this year.

2021 Highs & Lows

  • Highest peak so far in 2021 > 57, 746 – 24th March 2021
  • Lowest drop so far in 2021 > 19, 842 – 31st March 2021

Breakdown – As of 30th May 2021

  • Maximum Daily Concurrency – 53, 000 (average peak)
  • Median Daily Concurrency – 40, 000 to 42, 000 (average)
  • Minimum Daily Concurrency – 30, 000 (average)

To keep track of the Second Life Main Grid Stats see here. There is real time data of inworld online users and the exchange rate worth checking out. The Second Life registered users data stopped working back on 21st October 2020 showing 64, 687, 961 total resident signups.

Second Life Grid Size

Since the start of 2021 Second Life has been growing steadily in terms of the size of the main grid. Private Estates has shown positive net growth this year which is good to see. Linden owned regions have been growing throughout 2021 which is due to the lab adding new Linden Homes. Yay! 🙂

Here are the latest grid region statistics as of 30th May 2021.

Later this month the Second Life platform turns 18 years old and at the moment the metrics look good. Hopefully the metrics will show even more growth during 2021 into 2022. It’s really good seeing the Second Life grid growing and not declining like in the early 2010s.

Second Life Grid Statistics – April 2021 Update

We are now four months into 2021 and it’s time to look at the latest Second Life grid statistics to see what’s going on.

New: Traffic Lights

  • Green: Stats showing positive growth
  • Orange: Stats remaining stable / possible rise soon
  • Red: Decline in the stats / data stopped

Second Life Regions

Good news is that the Second Life grid is showing positive net growth at the moment. Most of the growth is coming from the expansion of the Bellisseria continent with new Linden owned regions being added. As many know already the lab connected the Bellisseria continent with Satori continent.

The Second Life land store is open which is making a positive difference now to the grid numbers overall. There has been more interest in private estates since the end of 2020 which is fantastic news. Let’s hope this positive trend will continue for the rest of 2021 and into 2022.

The Second Life grid size as of 11th April 2021

  • Total Main Grid Regions: 26, 504
  • Private Estates: 17, 864
  • Linden Owned: 8, 640
  • Total Area: 1736.97 (KM)

As of 28th February 2021

  • Total Main Grid Regions: 25, 729
  • Private Estates: 17, 302
  • Linden Owned: 8, 427

Back on 27th December 2020

  • Total Main Grid Regions: 25, 614
  • Private Estates: 17, 084
  • Linden Owned: 8, 531

Second Life Daily Concurrency

The Second Life daily concurrency levels have remained steady since the start of 2021. There have not been any huge peaks in the maximum daily concurrency yet. The highest recorded so far for 2021 was on 29th March 2021 with 57, 767 residents online.

It would be nice to see the daily concurrency surpass 60, 000 in the months ahead. Between March 2020 and May 2020 the daily average maximum Second Life user concurrency stayed around the 60, 000 mark.

April 2021 Daily Concurrency Stats

  • Maximum Daily Concurrency: 51, 000 to 57, 000
  • Median Daily Concurrency: 41, 000 to 45, 000
  • Minimum Daily Concurrency: 31, 000 to 34, 000

Second Life Signups

It seems that the Second Life Grid Survey no longer publishes daily metrics for Resident Signups to date. The last update was made on 21st October 2020 with 64, 687, 961 total residents.

This was a useful metric to see the population growth in Second Life and hopefully the data feeds will resume soon.

Second Life Website Traffic

It appears that during February 2021 SecondLife.com traffic dropped to 9.4 million visits. Back in December 2020 it peaked at 12.7 million visits. During March 2021 the website traffic increased to 11 million visits. I would imagine the website traffic will increase in the months ahead.

My next Second Life grid statistics will be published in July 2021.

Second Life shows positive grid growth during 2020

Main Grid Size as of 27th December 2020

Since the start of 2020 Second Life has steadily increased it’s overall grid size in terms of regions which is very good news indeed. The total area of all regions as of 27th December 2020 is 1678.64 square kilometres. That’s still a big amount to say the least.

Good news is that both Linden Owned and Private Estates have showed signs of positive net growth this year. Yay! 🙂

Main Grid Size on 27th December 2020

  • Total: 25, 614
  • Linden Owned: 8, 531
  • Private Estates: 17, 083

Interest for private estates has increased more in recent weeks (over 300 private estates) since Linden Lab announced that private estates were back available again in limited quantity and I think it’s back to normal now. Hopefully during 2021 there will be more interest in private estates in Second Life which would be a good thing.

Linden Lab have added hundred’s of new Linden owned regions during the course of 2020 expanding the Bellisseria continent eastwards with Linden themed style homes including victorian homes, log homes and stilt homes. The Moles have worked so hard in building new regions and then rolling it out to the public via the QA process as fast as possible. Great work! 🙂

More Linden home regions are coming during 2021 which will be exciting I’m sure for the Second Life community as there is still a big demand for Linden Homes. Chalet Linden homes will be released in first part of 2021 followed by new Linden theme releases later.

Every year events like Relay for Life of Second Life, Garden Expo, Second Life birthday and other big events do effect the grid numbers for a short time. There is a surge in regions then a sudden decline once the event is over. The grid statistics are updated every week on the Second Life Grid Survey.

I hope the Second Life grid will continue to grow in size in the new year and beyond that. Linden Lab main focus is on Second Life nowadays adding more improvements and features. I will blog about the grid statistics at various times during 2021. Stay tuned for that.
