On Tuesday 2nd April 2019 Google+ officially closed down after the recent data security breach and low usage numbers, This now ends the attempt to directly compete with the likes of Facebook and Twitter.
It’s a real shame because the Second Life and OpenSim communities had a strong presence on Google+ for many years. I hope that everyone managed to find other alternatives to keep updated on the latest metaverse happenings.
I’ll be using MeWe going forward. Feel free to add me on there.
Important Note: As early as 4th February 2019 anyone wanting to create new content will no longer be able to create new Google+ profiles, pages, communities or events. If you’re a Google+ Community owner or moderator you can still download your data for your Google+ community.
In the coming weeks the sign-in buttons for Google+ will stop working although you’ll be able to sign in with your Google account.
It will be a real shame to see Google+ shut down in two months time as it was a useful way to find out what’s happening in Second Life, OpenSim, Sansar and for many other interesting things.
Today Google has officially announced the social network Google+ will be shutting down in April 2019 instead of August 2019. Google apparently suffered another data leak effecting 52.5 million users. The shut-down of all Google+ APIs will occur within the next 90 days.
We will sunset all Google+ APIs in the next 90 days. Developers can expect to hear more from us on this topic in the coming days, and can stay informed by continuing to check the Google+ developer page.
We have also decided to accelerate sunsetting consumer Google+, bringing it forward from August 2019 to April 2019. We want to give users ample opportunity to transition off of consumer Google+, and over the coming months, we will continue to provide users with additional information, including ways they can safely and securely download and migrate their data.
For all Second Life and OpenSim communities that are on Google+ now is the time I think to start moving to other networks. The transition period starts now so download data and backup what you can.
Hopefully there will be a good social network big enough to reconnect everyone up again instead of everyone spreading out all over the place.
I’ve now removed Google+ connections from my blog.
Google has officially announced that the social media platform Google+ will be shutting down over the next ten months for consumers after the recent security flaw that has exposed users private details. Apparently up to 500,000 Google+ accounts were potentially affected. Google says Google+ currently has “low usage and engagement” and that 90 percent of Google+ user sessions last less than five seconds.
Huge impact on Second Life and OpenSim Google+ communities
This is sad news for all Second Life and OpenSim users that have been running active communities on Google+. This is very disappointing news especially for the active OpenSim Virtual community that has over 2, 000 members because it was a great resource to find out whats going on.
Anyone that uses Google+ will have to move else where within the next 10 months like onto Facebook, Reddit, Pluspora, Discord or Mastodon etc. Whatever happens the communities will come back stronger and bigger after the closure.
