Old Linden Homes Continents “Will Mostly Go Away”

It’s been a while since we last heard anything about the plans for the old Linden Home continents but according to Patch Linden via SSP? thread on the Second Life Forums on Wednesday 4th May 2022 the plan still stands where the old Linden Homes will “mostly go away”. Patch hopes to save some of them for historical purposes and hopes to keep areas online for those that may still want one.

Patch mentions there will be “some level of disruption that is unavoidable”. Patch gives an example saying “part of what will need to happen is the web based control system for the homes will be have to be removed and replaced with the similar/same control system we use in world today on the new homes”.  

There is no specific time when this will happen but I would imagine it will happen when the Linden Themes have been rolled out completely for the Bellisseria continent. This could be sometime in 2024-2025 or much earlier than that. I hope the lab will give advance warning to all those that still live on the old Linden Home continents when the closures/moves happen.

Your memory is accurate.  The plan still stands that the old Linden Homes continents will mostly go away.  Being the preservationist that I am, I do intend to save some of them for historical purposes and to cater to those who may still want one.  We haven’t quite worked out how that will go yet, but I predict that there will be some level of disruption that is unavoidable.  For example, part of what will need to happen is the web based control system for the homes will be have to be removed and replaced with the similar/same control system we use in world today on the new homes.

Hopefully the lab will update everyone on a regular basis on the old Linden home continents when the plans get put into effect. I will blog about any developments when I hear more.

Linden Lab Extending MFA Protection To Viewer Login

On Wednesday 4th May 2022 Linden Lab officially announced that they will be Extending MFA Protection to Viewer Login. To start using MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) you will need to enable MFA for your account found here. Activating MFA provides additional protection against unauthorized usage on your account such as changing your password, performing L$ transactions or changing your payment method etc.

Not everyone will use this but it helps to add an extra layer of protection on your account if you choose to activate MFA. MFA will be coming in the next Beta build for the Firestorm Viewer and other third party viewers may want add this in the near future.

We are pleased to announce we have added MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication) protection to the Viewer. Recently we added MFA to web login. Now it works with Viewer login as well.

To start using it, you will need to enable MFA for your account on this page: https://accounts.secondlife.com/mfa/status

You will need to download and install an MFA-enabled Viewer: https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/6.5.5.571282.html 

When you try to log in with an MFA-enabled Viewer, you will be prompted to enter a token from your authenticator app. If you have chosen to save your password information, a valid token will be saved for 30 days.  After 30 days your next login attempt will require another token.

For now, if you try to log in with a Viewer that is not MFA-enabled, nothing will change, and you will still be able to log in without a token.  However, if you have opted in to MFA then a token will be required for all Viewer logins beginning in the near future.
