Relay Weekend Regions Arrive For Next Month

Relay For Life of Second Life 2021

36 RFL regions have arrived on the grid for next months 2021 Relay Weekend in Second Life. Relay Weekend takes place on Saturday 12th June and on Sunday 13th June 2021. This year Hopefest will be happening on Wednesday 9th June 2021 which is a brand new event. On Wednesday 16th June the Flood the Region / Wrap Up Party will take place.

In 2020 the Relay community raised $250, 000 / $305, 946 USD in it’s 17th year in Second Life which is awesome. The Second Life community remained stronger than ever as covid-19 stopped real world fundraising activities. Hopefully 2021 will set new records and more strength.

SL18B Regions May 2021 Update

SL18B / SLB Regions – 23rd May 2021

During the past week the SL18B regions (SLB) have changed on the world map in Second Life in terms of the start of the transformation taking place and the expansion of the whole area. The snapshot above was taken on Sunday 23rd June 2021 showing new changes. Earlier in May the SL18B regions came online and you can see what it looked like below.

New Visual Changes

  • There are now 10 SLB Water regions at different points surrounding the birthday regions
  • Region terraforming can be seen clearly on most of the regions
  • The Stilts demo region (SLB Enchant) from SL17B has been revamped

Latest News

Training for SL18B will start this week for volunteers and exhibitors will be able to start building very soon.

All exhibitors will be contacted no later than 1st June 2021. Those that are successful will be contacted in-world by IM and Notecard by the Mole team. The lab has received over 250 applications for SL18B so far so it may time some time to process.

More SL18B information will be likely be announced by Linden Lab in the weeks ahead.

More Stilt regions added near the Chalet regions

This week another batch of new Stilt regions have been added on the east side of the cluster of Stilt regions connecting with the Chalet regions (in green – top right). It’s great to see more regions being added more often now and it won’t be long until this new area will be finished.

As you can see above on the map some of the new Stilt regions are not showing up on the map yet. It will hopefully be visible within the next few days or so. The Moles are building new Stilt Linden Homes mostly in the north heading towards the Chalet regions. The Stilts regions that have been completed look really nice so far and I think that the Moles have done a great job.

Here is a view from the Drumlin Farm region previewing the new Stilt regions nearby and the Sea Witch region in the far distance.

I will post more updates soon on the latest SSP developments.

Stilts Most Popular Choice for Linden Home Themes In 2021

On 5th May I opened a new poll called Which Linden Home Theme Is Your Favourite In 2021? and the final results are in. The most popular choice was Stilts with 53 votes (42.06%) followed by Chalets with 19 votes (15.08%) in second place with Victorian getting just 14 votes (11.11%). I guess this is a quick snapshot of what’s popular right now.

Last year the most popular choice for Linden Home themes was Log Cabins followed by Houseboats in second place then Trailers/Campers in third place. This year Log Cabins, Houseboats and Trailers/Campers have had less of the votes share.

The old Linden Home themes did not do very well at all this year with just one or two votes between them. Last year they came bottom of the poll options. I think Linden Lab needs to either improve the old Linden Home themes, merge the regions together with the new Linden Homes or pull the plug on them.

2020 Poll Results

I will create another poll like this next year to see what’s popular for Linden Home themes.

OpenSim 100, 000 regions milestone reached

For the first time OpenSim regions has reached the 100, 000 regions milestone via Hypergrid Business. Well done to all the OpenSim grid owners that made this happen during April 2021. As you can see below in the chart the total OpenSim total land area has kept on growing since December 2009.

OSgrid, Kitely, ZetaWorlds, DigiWorldz and the Discovery Grid has the most regions for April 2021. OSgrid, DigiWorldz,, AviWorlds, Tag Grid and Metropolis have the most active users on them for April 2021. Hypergrid Business now tracks a total of 1, 660 public accessible grids. 342 were active this month and 269 published their statistics.

OpenSim land area growth since December 2009 (Hypergrid Business Data)

Second Life by comparison has 26, 818 main grid regions in total as of 16th May 2021 from the Second Life Grid Survey. 18, 205 are Private Estates and 8, 613 are Linden owned regions. Second Life total area is now 1757.54 (km).

Second Life Origins On The Second Life Destination Guide

Check out the Second Life Origins category on the Second Life Destination featuring some of the most popular historical landmarks across the grid. It’s a really useful list of places on there I think from the beta contributor wall, maps of Second Life, the historical museum, the first region in Second Life founded back in 2002 named Da Boom and more.

There are 17 listings on 2 pages worth visiting if you love Second Life history. Most of the places listed I’ve been to and revisited over the years. Baffin Island is one I remember well because I transferred to the main grid back in mid December 2008. It was the welcoming spot for teen residents “graduating” to adulthood based around an library coffee shop at the heart of the region. The grids merged back in January 2011 which was over ten years ago now. The former teen grid regions can be found if you search for Lewis on the Map in Second Life.

It’s amazing to think on 23rd June 2021 Second Life officially turns 18 and that means Second Life will begin it’s adult years very soon. Second Life will hopefully be around for many decades to come so I don’t think there is anything to worry about currently.

Hopefully more historical places will be added to the Second Life Destination Guide in months and years ahead.
