THE METAVERSE’S NEXT CHAPTER: SANSAR OPENS TO THE PUBLIC IN CREATOR BETA

2017-07-31 00:00:00 UTC

New Platform Simplifies Creating and Publishing Social VR Experiences,
Empowers Creators to Earn Money with a Robust Marketplace

SAN FRANCISCO – July 31, 2017 –Sansar, the world’s leading social VR platform, today opened its creator beta to the public. Sansar empowers individuals, communities, schools, studios, corporations, brands and others to easily create, share, and ultimately sell immersive 3D social experiences for consumers to enjoy on HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows PCs. Developed by Linden Lab®, the company behind the groundbreaking virtual world Second Life®, Sansar is a brand new platform built from the ground up to enable everyone to become a creator.

At opening, Sansar’s Atlas directory already features hundreds of engaging virtual experiences, including multiplayer games, recreations of historic sites and landmarksart installationsmovie theatersmuseumsnarrative experiencesjungle temples360º video domessci-fi themed hangouts, and much more. Creators invited to the platform during a limited-access preview have published thousands of amazing public and private experiences, and with the opening of beta today, the world is now invited to join them.

“Sansar democratizes social VR,” said Ebbe Altberg, CEO of Linden Lab. “Until now, complexity and cost has limited who could create and publish in this medium, and Sansar dramatically changes that. It’s been inspiring to see the thousands of virtual creations that have already published with Sansar during our limited preview, and I’m looking forward to the explosion of creativity we’ll see now that we’ve opened the doors in beta.”

SANSAR CAPABILITIES

Simplified Creation & Cross-Device Distribution

Intuitive drag-and-drop editing makes it easy to create a scene with assets imported from common 3D modeling tools or purchased from the Sansar Store.

With the push of a button, creations become hosted multi-user experiences that can be enjoyed by consumers using VR head-mounted displays (HMDs) as well as in desktop mode on PCs. Every Sansar experience has a unique link that can be shared via Facebook, Twitter, email, blogs, and with whomever the creator wishes. Each instance of an experience is currently set to allow 35+ concurrent avatars, and automated instancing will enable creators to reach unlimited audiences.

Convincing Social Interactions

With detailed customizable avatars, Sansar provides rich social interactions, without requiring additional hardware like cameras and trackers. A unique integration with Speech Graphics’ technology provides accurate avatar lip-syncing and facial animations, driven in real time as users simply speak into the microphones on their HMDs or audio headsets. With the use of VR hand controllers, users’ hand and arm movements are accurately and realistically mirrored by their avatars, thanks to an integration of IKinema’s powerful RunTime middleware, the world’s leading full-body inverse kinematics (IK) technology.

Robust Marketplace & Earning Opportunities

With Sansar, creators can earn from their virtual creations by selling them in the Sansar Store. In the future, creators will also be able to sell, rent, or charge for access to their experiences. At the opening of beta, the Sansar Store features thousands of items for sale from creators around the world.

A relationship with TurboSquid provides creators with access to hundreds of additional high-quality 3D models in the Store today, with thousands more being added in the coming months. Planned integration with TurboSquid’s StemCell initiative will make it easy for TurboSquid’s community of 3D modelers to immediately upload and sell their creations in the Sansar Store, further augmenting the assets readily available to Sansar creators.

Pricing

Sansar is free to use, with additional capacity and customer support available to creators through paid subscriptions, starting at $9.99/month.

Sansar Open Beta opening “next week anyway” according to Oz Linden at TPV Meeting

Sansar Breaking News

At a recent Third Party Viewer meeting at 17 minutes / 12 seconds Oz Linden via voice chat in public said that Sansar Open Beta opening starts on Monday. He then quickly changed that seconds later by saying “next week anyway” which is rather interesting.

Oz Linden said that Second Life is not going away – not even a little bit. Yay! 🙂

If this news is correct then this is very exciting news for those interested in trying out the Sansar Open Beta finally after a long wait.

Next week will be most interesting to see if Sansar Open Beta will finally launch or if it gets delayed further into August or September. We will have to wait and see.

More updates soon..

OSgrid 10th birthday is happening this weekend

OSgrid will be celebrating it’s 10th birthday this weekend (#OSG10B) with a great selection of live performances, live djs playing great tunes and birthday themed events to mark this very special occasion.

It’s going to be the biggest party ever on the OSgrid and it’s expected the visitor attendance will be pretty high during the weekend. Finally there will be many exhibits worth seeing created by OSgrid residents who have spent hours creating their own content for this year’s 10th birthday.

Today OSgrid comes top of the table for the most regions and most active users on OpenSim which is pretty impressive after ten years.

Join OSgrid this weekend and enjoy the 10th birthday celebrations! 🙂

OpenSim reaches 80, 000 regions for the first time

Hypergrid Business Data

On Sunday 16th July Hypergrid Business reported that the OpenSim land area surpassed 80, 000 regions for the first time. This is a new record for sure and the number of OpenSim regions is still set to rise in the months ahead breaking new records. It’s going to take time to reach the 100, 000 regions milestone but when that happens that would be pretty amazing.

OSGrid, Kitely, Metropolis, Atek Grid and Lost Paradise at the moment have the most regions on OpenSim. For the most active users on OpenSim then Metropolis, OSGrid, AllCity and DigiWorldz take top position in the table.

In comparison Second Life now has 23, 635 Main Grid regions in total. The highest recorded was 31, 988 regions back on 13th June 2010 in Second Life. Since then the grid has declined more and more. Since 2010 roughly 8, 000 regions have gone offline however there have been weeks where there was positive region growth. I hope there will more positive region growth in the future.

If the rates continue then I would imagine Second Life would go down to roughly 16, 000 in less than 7 years time. Even then it would take a very long time to visit every single region in Second Life. Even with OpenSim it would take years to explore.

New Sansar Creator Preview Video

This week a new promotional video of Sansar Creator Preview was uploaded on the official Sansar YouTube channel showing another sneak preview of Sansar.

The video runs for 1 minute and 38 seconds which is definitely worth watching if you interested in Sansar. “Ria shares her thoughts on this new platform and offers a sneak peek at “Little Giant,” one of the first experiences created with Sansar during the creator preview”.

Linden Lab have sent out even more invites to Second Life users in recent days according to various sources. Once you receive the Welcome to Sansar Creator Preview email, accept the invitation and then you are ready to get started with Sansar.

Second Life Grid Statistics Summer Update 2017

This is the 2017 summer update on the latest Second Life grid statistics currently available. My last statistics blog post was published back in April 2017 where I reported the grid was still declining.

All stats used in this blog post are from the Second Life Grid Survey & New SL Sims in past week thread via SLUniverse Forums. Tyche Shepherd collects the data from Bots that helps with the weekly reports every week.

Second Life Grid Size

Since the start of 2017 the total amount of Main Grid regions have dropped further during Q1 & Q2 with only a tiny amount of region growth from Private Estates.

Linden Owned regions have increased since the start of 2017 is most interesting. Earlier this year regions dropped under the 24, 000 mark for the first time. If things don’t change before the end of 2017 then expect the total amount of regions to be closer around the 23, 000 mark.

> 1st January 2017

  • Total number of Main Grid regions: 24, 002
  • Private Estates: 16, 783
  • Linden Owned: 7, 219

> 2nd April 2017

  • Total number of Main Grid regions: 23, 806
  • Private Estates: 16, 586
  • Linden Owned: 7, 220

As of 5th July 2017

  • Total number of Main Grid regions: 23, 649
  • Private Estates: 16, 414
  • Linden Owned: 7, 235

Daily Concurrency

The daily concurrency in Second Life seems to be averaging between 49, 000 (at max) – 28, 000 (lowest) on a daily basis at the moment. The Median Daily Concurrency is now at 40, 000.

The daily concurrency has dropped down since the start of 2017 and it’s not surprising as we are heading into the summer months.

Second Life Signups

As of 5th July 2017 there have been 50,  837, 795 signups for Second Life to date.

Sansar

Sansar Open Creator Beta is expected to launch this summer. There is still no confirmed opening date yet. It will be interesting to see if Sansar will have any impact on Second Life grid numbers going forward.

My next Second Life Grid Statistics update will be posted in September 2017
