OpenSim has reached the 70, 000 regions milestone & update on Second Life regions

According to Hypergrid Business on 15th November 2015 OpenSim has reached the 70, 000 regions milestone which is incredible news. There are now the equivalent of 71, 034 standard regions on OpenSim’s 314 active public grids and it’s increasing every month. OpenSim active users reached the 34, 000 active users mark for the first time this month.

For those who are new readers, OpenSim is a free, open source virtual world platform that’s compatible with the Oculus Rift. It allows people with no technical skills to quickly and cheaply create virtual worlds, and then teleport to other virtual worlds. Those with technical skills can run OpenSim worlds on their own servers for free, while commercial hosting starts at less than $5 a region — compared to $300 a region for the same land in Second Life. OpenSim

In the graph below the total land area of OpenSim has reached many new milestones during 2014 and 2015. This time last year regions passed the 50, 000 mark and today there are more than 70, 000 regions.

In the graph below shows the Hypergrid growing faster than the closed grids and InWorldz. In 2015 there has been more interest it seems for the Hypergrid.

Second Life

In Second Life today there are 24, 952 main grid regions in total left, with 17, 852 regions being private estates and 7, 100 regions being Linden owned regions. In the graph below shows the total number of main grid regions from 2006 to 2015. There is a noticeable decline in the graphs below and Second Life has a lot of catching up to do with OpenSim.

In the graph below shows Second Life historical concurrency from 2009 to 2015.

In the graph below shows historical Maximum Daily Concurrency from December 2009 to November 2015. Second Life had more people logging in between 2010 to 2012 (60, 000min – 80, 000max) and today the number of people logging into Second Life has dropped (27, 000min to 52, 000max).

Will 2016 see Second Life decline further and OpenSim still on the increase ?

I would love to see Second Life regions increase in 2016 and for OpenSim regions to steady out more. It’s unclear whether or not Project Sansar will have a huge impact on Second Life and OpenSim.  We will have to wait and see!

  2. Hello again Daniel-) I haven’t commented here in some time now but this article was posted by someone in my g+ feed so I thought I might go ahead and comment.

    While there is a bit of gaming of numbers (not referring to SL as my interests are only OpenSim and the Hyperverse specifically now) the overall trends are accurate.

    Some may pick at those over insignificant numbers but keeping an eye on the trends is a good idea.

    Of course overall there is nothing near SL in sheer numbers of people, it has become a very busy place for those of us interesting. Here is an article where I noted, among other things, that I personally was seeing the tipping point then, and events have proven this true over this past year.

    Recently someone started an events website that I have now pinned to my chrome browser, which, while being only a few days in existence is already showing the wealth of interesting things going on in the Hyperverse, all places connected via the hypergrid.

      To me it seems OpenSim is gaining while Second Life is losing regions every week. I’m more worried about what will happen when Sansar launches next year.

  4. A quick comment about Sansar, what I’ve noticed it that is pushing people away from SL and LL. Apparently (and i’m not really keeping up with SL either these days) there are already changes being made in SL to prepare for Sansar that require users to upgrade their computers. They can’t. Sadly though it seems we’re just losing those people, instead of getting them to come over to the hypergrid (or, if they like that sort of thing, one of the walled-garden opensim grids).

    I think we should mount a big campaign to let people over in the ‘big closed grid’ know there’s a whole hyperverse waiting for them! But that’ll likely get us sued by LL of course 🙂

    1. While this is on my mind, I want to let you and your readers know that some of the closed regions in SL have actually moved out into OpenSim.

      One I specifically want to mention is the the Ivory City created by Lumiere Noir has been recreated on a special grid by him but as he has died his partner has finished it.

      Not to lesson the fact of his death, I think he would like it if more people know of this, and go visit.

      It is on a 4 region Varregion, http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Varregion, in the Sanctuary grid and can be visited most easily via any hypergrid enabled place/grid. The HGTP is

      sanctuary.homelinux.org:8012

      and after you get there ( this is the main welcome region for this special grid which is primarily known for its many hypergates ) put

      Ivory City

      into your map and tp there.

      There are others “out here” that can be found by those looking.

      1. And that is one area where the hypergrid is maturing as well: finding things. For example, with my own initiative (http://hypevents.net/ – shameless plug 🙂 or the brilliant opensimworld.com which intends to be a comprehensive list of hypergrid-enabled regions.

        What I like most, however, is the interest in actual art and music (instead of just finding excuses to meet for virtual sex). In SL, an average jazz concert (by an actual friggin brilliant live band) would attract maybe 3 or 4 people. Over at the hypergrid, a mere dj set playing some jazzy tunes attracts 20-30 visitors. A much better place for me.
