Tom Boellstorff featured on Episode 31 of The Drax Files

Episode 31 of The Drax Files is now available to watch featuring Tom Boellstorff talking about avatar identity and the use of virtual worlds. Tom is an anthropologist from the University of California in Irvine. Tom is the author of Coming of Age In Second Life which was published back in 2008 and many may find the name Tom Boellstorff familiar.

When Tom signed up to Second Life back in 2004 there were only around 2, 500 members with an average concurrency of two hundred. Tom said that you could fly over every region across the grid within a week at two hours a day.

Tom says that Second Life’s a place with places in it, people are still interacting inside the virtual world, there’s still plenty to observe. Tom feels if the virtual reality explosion happens then virtual worlds are going to be a major use case. Tom says that VR won’t take over virtual worlds, it will be a different way of accessing them.

The interview is around five minutes long but there is great footage of Second Life throughout the episode and its really worth watching.

About Epsiode 31

“The challenge is always time” he says: “You need to get to know the people you are studying, you need to live among them, so they can get to know you!”

For over 12 years Tom Boellstorff has been an active resident of Second Life, not only writing books about his research there and the methodology used in exploring user-centric online societies but engaging hands on with diverse communities such as the Parkinson’s support group and Virtual Ability.

In a recently published new edition of his book “Coming of Age in Second LIfe” […] he cautions against dismissing sustainable digital communities like Second Life simply because they are not the hot tech property of the day: “The biggest obstacle in studying technology is the obsession of the media with what is new and what is big. Nobody asks me why I am still going to and writing about Indonesia for instance. From an explorer’s point of view the culture in Second Life today is as vibrant and fascinating to me if not more so than when I started out!”

In this 5 minute mini-documentary Tom Boellstorff not only addresses the issue of big data, avatar identity and what role the new wearable VR technology may play for revitalizing interest in virtual worlds but elaborates on a more nuanced way to address the difference between what we tend to label “real” versus “virtual”.

Press Release
BURN2 2015: Carnival of Mirrors
Press Contact:  iSkye Silverweb

This year’s theme is about mirrors and masks, mazes and merger. It will be a kind of magic  show that takes the form of an oldfashioned carnival. This Carnival of Mirrors asks three  essential questions: within our mediasaturated world, where products and people,  consumption and communion morph into an endlessly diverting spectacle, who is the  trickster, who is being tricked, and how might we discover who we really are?

Classic carnivals, as theaters of illusion, upheld a very strict dividing line that separated  carnies, cast as showmen, from members of a naïve public who were labeled chumps and  suckers, marks and rubes. Our carnival, however, will perform an even more subversive trick  — its motto is Include the Rube. The wall dividing the observer from observed will disappear,  as by an act of magic; through the alchemy of interaction, everyone at once can be the carny  and the fool.

With great glee and inspired excitement, we announce the upcoming BURN2: Carnival of  Mirrors. The event will take place October 17-25, 2015, culminating in the Burning of the Man  on the 24th and the Temple Burn on the 25th. Going into this season of preparation, the  annual plot sale opens, along with the Plot Lottery and Juried Art Camp Applications. This  year we will gift MORE free plots in the Plot Lottery! And prices for the plot sale are LOWER!

Ebbe Altberg discussing Project Sansar

This week Nick Ochoa and Ebbe Altberg met up and discussed Project Sansar in a 30 minute  conversation. It’s a very interesting fireside discussion with some new updates to mention.

The latest update is that the start of the closed alpha testing will be happening in a few weeks from now and that it’s a bit behind schedule. The Alpha phase will continue for the rest of 2015/2016 with a public beta sometime in 2016. No set dates have been given yet.

Those that have been invited to the closed alpha will be able build their own experiences in Maya and publish the results on Sansar by pushing a button in the application.

In terms of Second Life active monthly users Ebbe mentioned it’s now south of 1 million with a rather slow and steady decline. At Second Life’s peak Ebbe mentioned it was north of 1 million for active monthly users for Second Life. Second Life is still going strong and people cashed out 60 million dollars last year.

Ebbe mentioned that Sansar land will be larger and cheaper. There will be a sales tax within the Sansar revenue model. VR will take years to get to a critical mass and VR will change the way we play/socialize.

Ebbe talks about ways that Second Life can be used such as musicians in SL concerts, selling clothing, virtual goods and there was a mention on the 1920s Berlin project.

The lab will be hand picking people for the alpha with the right skill set and the doors will open next year to the public. It’s going to be long journey ahead and it’s going to be fun ride.

Stay tuned for more news on Sansar in the months ahead. 🙂
