According to Tyche Shepherd’s New SL Sims in past week thread on the SLUniverse Forums (27th July), Private Estates in Second Life dropped below the 19, 000 regions mark for the first time since 15th June 2008. The total number of Main Grid regions dropped under the 26, 000 mark last week and the decline continues it seems on a weekly basis.
The Net Private Estate losses for the year to date stands at 286 regions so far which is a 1.5% loss.
As of 27th July 2014
- 25, 980 Total Main Grid regions
- 18, 988 Private Estates
- 6, 992 Linden Owned
On 5th January 2014
- 26, 227 Total Main Grid regions
- 19, 241 Private Estates
- 6, 986 Linden Owned

I can understand why – the pricing. Lindens seem to be going out of their way to put themselves out of business. I should know as I am one of the nutters who pays for a private region plus I have to pay VAT on top of that. I am paying nearly double on what it use to cost people to have a private sim a number of years back. If I didn’t share the number would be 18, 987

Thanks, Win. I agree for most of the grid the price is high in terms of land costs/tier and many wish for it to be lowered at some point in the near future.

No, they don’t comment because that is fact and reality. The amount of regions decreasing slowly since 2010. But with 26.000 regions overall, Second Life is still a huge virtual world and a good deal bigger than any other single grid.
When I came to SL in 2006, there were 5000 regions. Now we have five times more. From my point of view, SL is still a story of success! 🙂

It’s sad to report these numbers but the truth should be published. Bad or good we should still know what is going on.
Hypergrid Business does a great job at publishing monthly numbers. At the moment it’s on the up!

We will have to wait and see how much the new skill games policy will impact land losses (or gain). So il be looking for the report of the next 3 weeks.

Linden Lab has delayed the new skill games policy until 1st September 2014. I guess we will have to wait a while longer. 😦
Well it would be sad too see further land losses and the hope is for a rise in regions again soon.

Sadly it looks like the losses are already going on to high, as im reading ti many notices about a lot of sims that are making their goodbye party!

I would expect a noticeable difference (decline/rise) when the new platform launches during the next year or so. We will have to wait and see what happens.

And you should go back to school and learn mathematics. With the current rate it will take about 35 years to come down to 5000 regions.
But for me, another 5 years of SL would be enough. Then there will be something newer and better. Perhaps High Fidelity, perhaps Linden Labs next virtual world, or something completely different…

I have been a business man in second life for a good 5 years or so and I’m now noticing a difference in sales and visitors to my shop. Market place us where most my sales take place and it’s killing people exploring sl
As for the original Philip linden ( Philip rose dale) he is creating a new virtual world and it’s only in alpha stage at the mo!
With this world eventually being released I can’t see second life competing as the teq being used to link up worlds and the servers that can be used… Sl may become old hat!
