BURN2 is an extension of the Burning Man festival and community into the world of Second Life. It is an officially sanctioned Burning Man regional event, and the only virtual world event out of more than 100 real world Regional groups

The BURN2 Team operates events year around, culminating in an annual major festival of community, art and fire in the fall – a virtual echo of Burning Man itself.

We’d like to encourage you to use the following labels and hashtags when you write about the event: Burn2,  #burn2 . We will promote those tags to make it easier for people to find your content

InWorldz 3rd birthday update

Last year InWorldz (March 31st – April 3rd, 2011) turned two years old in the metaverse which was really amazing and special. The birthday celebrations were hosted on four InWorldz Events sims to celebrate InWorldz reaching two years old. I went along to the InWorldz 2nd birthday celebrations and took many snapshots from the four regions.

This year InWorldz 3rd birthday bash will be held in real life this weekend (31st March – 2nd April 2012) in Vegas at the first official InWorldz Conference apparently. But nothing for birthday celebrations inworld it seems this year.

Getting the Free Direct Delivery Bear 2012

This week Direct Delivery launched officially by Linden Lab which is great news for Merchants and for the rest of the SL community that use the SL Marketplace to shop all things SL. At the bottom of the blog post it seems Linden Lab are giving away a FREE limited-edition Linden BearI think this Direct Delivery Bear is rather cute and loveable. :p

Get this free limited-edition Linden Bear in celebration of the new, more efficient way to receive purchases from the Marketplace — not BOXED! The bear will be delivered to a new Received Items folder. Grab your free bear, find it in your Received Items folder, and get a notecard telling you more about the changes to the Marketplace.

New Resident Experience regions over time

Here are snapshots of various new resident experience regions Linden Lab have rolled out over the years including the historical orientation islands and help islands. Historical snapshots below (SL beta – 2012) and feel free to share your new resident experience memories in comments. 🙂

Orientation Island Public – (SL Beta – 2012)

New Orientation Island – (2006-2008)

Help Island – (2006 – 2012)

Welcome Island Public – (April 2010 to 2012 )

SL Discovery Island Public  (April 2010 to mid 2011)

Greeter Island – (November 2011 – January 2012)

New Destination Islands – (March 2012 – current experience)

What’s next ?

Today I created a new Flickr set called New Residents Regions if you are interested in viewing more snapshots of the New Resident Experience in Second Life. I joined TSL back in October 2006 and went though Orientation Island TG. When I reached the end I was teleported to the TG Welcome Area where I started my adventures as a young teenager.

Between 2005 – 2011 Teens had Orientation Island 5 (overflow region) & Orientation Island TG (active) plus two Teen Help Islands which were never used. The snapshot below I took on 31st May 2008 showing a busy Orientation Island 5. There were between 14-30 new teens at any one time going through these teen Orientation Islands. Today Orientation Island 5 and the two Teen Help Islands still remain on the grid today but teleport access has been disabled.

Today Help Island Public, Help Island Public 2, Orientation Island Public and the newer Welcome Island Public you can still visit to go through the basics of Second Life. 🙂

New Destination Islands added to the new user experience

This week Linden Lab have renamed Welcome Islands to Destination Islands as part of new user experience changes to Second Life. Linden Lab have rolled out many different versions of help regions over the years to help new users in Second Life.

These new Destination Islands have a new feel to them when you first arrive. Destination Islands are Linden Realms themed and it seems the experience is even more simple than before. There are 24 Destination Islands which I believe new users are now being sent to.

There are 7 portals and when you walk through you will be automatically teleported. Once you leave Destination Island you cannot go back and the teleport says its failed.

Here are snapshots from Destination Island. As you can see the edge of the central hub area is surrounded by green Linden Realms trees and water.

Destination Island arrival where you have to choose from different destinations on themed boards. To visit you have to walk through the portals to teleport to the Second Life destinations. This is the first view new residents will now see when they log in for the first time in Second Life however there doesn’t seem to be any help tutorials on the island which is rather alarming.

A snapshot from above showing a massive Second Life hand and portals in the middle of a green jungle of trees.

Try it out if you are interested in exploring Destination Islands.
