Rod Humble talks about virtual goods and more during Bloomberg interview

Rod Humble (Rodvik Linden) talked about virtual goods, online communities and the current financial position at Linden Lab. Rod mentioned Second Life many times during the during 3 minutes and 57 seconds Bloomberg interview on 29th June 2011.

Watch interview here

Key points during the interview…

  • Second Life is really a shared creativity tool – online communities – creativity are the magic
  • Rod talked about selling a virtual chair
  • Rod mentioned “poetry and music communities”
  • Virtual goods – “last quarter was our most successful quarter ever”
  • “Second Life is 8 years old”
  • “Joined the company in January” – “wonderful tool set”
  • Focus – “Easier to get into the product”
  • “We’re not looking for any further investment right now”
  • “We’re profitable, we’ve got a very good cash balance”
  • “16, 000 people signing up everyday”
  • No IPO for Linden Lab

Rod mentioned a lot of good positive things about Second Life & Linden Lab during the interview which I thought was really encouraging and interesting. Rod mentioning that “We’re profitable, we’ve got a very good cash balance” are healthy signs indeed. Sounds good right?

I think the SL community are starting to believe and are liking Rod Humble for the direction he is talking Second Life in now. With mesh starting to rollout next month and a possible mobile tablet in the pipeline. These are very exciting times I think.

Let’s hope the trend will continue during the rest of 2011 and into 2012.

Popular SL news during June 2011

This is the June 2011 edition of popular Second Life news with links and dates below. Previous SL monthly recaps here.

New SL avatars in the library

Linden Lab have added a new selection of SL avatars into the library folder it seems. There’s new smart looking robots and animals now under Library > Clothing > Initial Outfits. When I first joined Second Life back in October 2006 there wasn’t much in the Library folder. Today there’s more choice for new residents coming into Second Life which is great.

  • 12 new robot avatars – Renn Yifu
  • 12 new animal avatars – Damien Fate

Linden Lab plans to make these new sl avatars in the new resident registration flow soon.

Anyway, yeah, we plan to make these available in the registration flow and avatar selector so all new Resis will have the choice of being a windup robot, scampering freely on all fours, etc.

These aren’t all, stay tuned for more surprises…

Wearing them…

  • Click on the outfit folder you would like then drag the folder onto your avatar to wear.

Here’s a snapshot of Robot Avatar PD.

Here’s a snapshot of Robot Avatar Titan.

Second Physics special event at SL8B on 1st July 2011

Second Physics, founded by Talete Flanagan, is an Italian italian non-profit group for the popularization of science in Second Life. On Friday 1st July they will hosting a special event at their exhibit in SL8B Magnificent starting at 1:30pm SLT. Sounds interesting and worth attending to check it out.

Since 2009 Second Physics has organized Scienza on the Road, in collaboration with Immersiva.2life, Italian group for the popularization of culture and art. Scienza on the Road brings science in the Italian lands, and also into the English-speaking ones starting from this year. Physicists, teachers and experts hold conversations on a number of scientific subjects, with the use of captivating interactive tools – sculptures, fractals, atomic models, optical illusions, and the active participation of the audience. Thanks to its touring structure, the project can reach a varied audience in the lands where they usually hang out and a greater number of people, in comparison to any other residential activity. A number of disciplines have been dealt with so far: Sub-nuclear physics, High Energy Physics, Mathematics, Acoustics, Optics, Astronomy, the History of Electricity, Neurology, Medicine, Age Setting of Cultural Goods, Emotional Economy, Science and scientific fiction, Astrophysics, Cosmology, Cyberscience, Computer Science, Music and Mathematics, Molecular Biology… to be continued…
The conversations are in Italian voice and English text chat.

The SL8B sims will be closed on 2nd July 2011 (11:59pm). Last week for exploring and snapshots of SL8B. Linden Lab will be releasing the SL8B statistics in the first week of July 2011. Yay!

If you know of any other special events at SL8B this week, feel free to contact me. 🙂

Visiting Azizi, the Duran Duran universe in Second Life

After hearing about the opening of Duran Duran sim in Second Life recently, today I finally went to visit the attraction. According to Tateru Nino recent blog post “(Duran Duran Universe/DDU) has attracted just 165 unique visitors. That’s one in ten-thousandactive Second Life users”. As many know already Duran Duran made a promise to have a inworld presence in Second Life back in 2006.

It’s great that they now have a presence in Second Life in 2011 and lets hope it will continue for years to come. I think this is very good news for the SL community because many have waited a long time for this to happen inworld. It’s a really nice sim with lots to explore and do over there.

Duran Duran opened on 15th June 2011.

On 16th June 2011 there was a press release from the Duran Dduran website.

The Duran Duran Universe is just about ready to open! Debuting on June 22nd, the DDU will soon be unveiled for ALL to see. If you haven’t yet registered on Second Life, and would like to take a look around, you can visit SECOND LIFE and get yourself acquainted with every thing before the DD world officially opens its doors.

We have a welcome message from Chrissy, the DDU community manager who keeps everything running smoothly. We are all excited to see you (in avatar form, of course) in the DD Virtual World !

Dear Duran Duran fans and Second Life visitors!

The Duran Duran Universe – the permanent virtual residence of and by the band Duran Duran in Second Life – will soon open its gates.

I am so very thrilled about it that I can hardly find any words. I am very happy to have had the opportunity to be the proud witness to the birth of a magic masterminds brainchild and I feel even more honoured to now share this amazingly beautiful wonderland with you.

From the top of the lipstick tower high in the Azizi sky to the underwater UFO Club in the Sanhedralite sea the Duran Duran Universe is packed full of wonderful artistic treasures, interactive features, innovative multimedia and exciting events and games. All carefully chosen by the band members as part of their motto: “designed to make people party!”

I am looking forward to welcoming you all personally in the DDU – join the adventure and meet me there!

Yours,
Chrissy Welinder
DDU Community Manager

Latest update published by Katy on 22nd June 2011 called A blog from Katy. This blog post talks about the four islands and how amazing they are all.

SL8B week 1 highlights

Wow, what a fun packed week it’s been at Second Life’s 8th birthday celebrations. The SL8B sims are open until 2nd July 2011 so there’s still time to explore the exhibits at SL8B. There should be less lag next week and it should be quieter.

I have enjoyed exploring the wonderful magic builds at the 21 SL8B sims and the live music events as well.  I have enjoyed greeting and stage managing this year. From what I could tell this year there’s been a lot of coverage of SL8B on SL resident blogs, Twitter, Plurk and Flickr. So far I have captured many amazing SL8B snapshots (395) so far this year with more to come next week at SL8B.  That’s more than in previous birthday events in Second Life.

I’m trying to find out the latest SL8B stats for this year and when I know I will publish them.

My SL8B blog coverage from week 1…
