Update on Future of TSL from Terrence Linden

Terrence Linden came to talk inworld today at Plush Non Profit commons region about the upcoming Teen Grid Transition. Over 100 avatars attended the meeting, organized by Techsoup. It can’t be easy one Linden against 100+ avatars in the same location but Terrence Linden delivered really well this morning. Expect an official transcript posted on the Nonprofit Commons website very soon. Alot of new useful information was exchanged between residents and Terrence Linden.

Important New Updates from Terrence Linden.

  • Expect a blog post in about 2 weeks on the Official Second Life blog about the layout dates for the TSL Transition
  • All of the sims that are on TG now (including teen mainland) will become part of the Main Grid still in their current locations and teens that have land will be still there during the transition
  • 13-15 year olds will come to MG via special registration APIs for the organization. 16-17 year olds will be able to join through the SL public process then to be added to the region by that group
  • Teens will be able to visit “G” rated sims
  • Between 5-10K registrations a month on TG for new Teen residents
  • Combat sims are being looked into
  • New terms of service for users to agree for those that are involved when the time comes
  • Many teen residents have been sending Terrence letters of protest and youtube vidoes of why they love TSL
  • LL are exploring the idea of field trips where groups may set up trips for a limited amount of time for teens to visit sims on the main grid. Or maybe friend another Teen region and have an exchange. I.e teens visit the NASA sims etc.

Terrence Linden finishes up by saying:

  • I think the best that we can all do is make suggestions both regarding safety and experience for these individuals and be patient with us, that is A LOT to ask I know.
  • However, we are trying to move everyone on the Grid forward
  • I look forward to seeing/talking to everyone again down the road!

I now have a copy of the full transcript if anyone would like a copy inworld. What are your reactions on the teen grid transition and if you went to the meeting what were your throughts of it all?

I would love to hear from you in comments and I will post futher blog posts on this when I have more to report on. 🙂

@paypabak: That’s still something Linden Lab is working on and field trips is still being worked out. (Bag of ideas)

Considering I’ve met several teens on the main grid(in mature regions), they might as well allow teens on it. They’ll get on the main grid anyway. It’s a good idea limiting them to G-rated regions(even though they can get into R-rated movies).

I never liked the idea of separating the two age groups, because once somebody turns 18, they can no longer hang out on the grid most of their SL friends are on. Plus, I can’t sell stuff to users on the teen grid.

You do raise a good point about access to mature regions. I’ve been seeing that several adults are expressing concern for our safety and talking about how any teen can alt cam into a mature region. Maybe even watch a few people knocking stuff up. But then again, when you think about it, there are already dozens, maybe even hundreds of teens who dual account and are already exposed to these things in the first place. Though, I wonder if this level of concern might cause another zindra to be created. Either for G regions or M regions.

@Garrett Williams: I can’t see this working very well. Your right teens will find ways around it I think. 2011 is going to be an interesting year to see what happens and what impact this will have on the rest of the grid. I transferred over to the Main Grid in Mid-December 2008 and it was rather sad at times cause I left my friends behind. My TG friends list I had and other bits are removed from my inventory cause of the transfer across. Hopefully I will be able to see friends when they move across later this year.

@Blaze Borgin: Very true. The Zindra regions were set up to put all of the adult/sexual nature content on etc. It will be interesting when this happens what everyone’s reactions will be like.

Zindra is actually immensely useful, it will act as a magnet attracting most of the teens and leaving the rest of us in peace 🙂

Terrence Linden should be posting those details on the SL Blog very soon. Either this week or next week I would think because Terrence said it would be 2 weeks until the next announcement (8th October 2010 meeting).

I’ve been reading up on the official blog post. Nearly all of the adult residents have their concerns focused on the legal issues that are going to arise from this. As in it’s no longer about a curious or bored teen alt camming over into someone’s little « play area » but the problems that can occur both for the company and any adult if they unknowingly end up having sexual relations with a teen. I know that second life is not all about sex, but I also know how huge the sex industry is on the main grid. Does LL really know what kind of slippery slope they’re teetering over right now?
