This is a special early post looking back at the first six months of 2013 in Second Life on what happened between January 2013 to June 2013 including Linden Lab announcements, popular SL news stories and big events that shaped 2013. All links below are from my blog posts during the first six months of 2013 and I’ll be publishing the final six months of 2013 post before the end of December 2013. Stay tuned for that.
I can’t believe it’s nearly christmas and 2014 already!
Visit InWorldz Desert Island welcome area today and check out the new look christmas themed region for 2013. The welcome area is covered in snow, christmas trees, snowmen and santa helpers. There is exactly two weeks to go until christmas day which is always awesome. It’s time to visit and hangout with friends by the warm fire.
The bear with his santa helpers.
Snowman looks for others.
Nice christmas trees surrounding the welcome hub.
It certainly feels like christmas time now around InWorldz. Great job to all those that helped out with the christmas theme because it’s brilliant this year.
BURN2 Santalarity event in Second Life will be starting this year on Saturday 14th December 2013. The event starts at 10am SLT through to 10pm SLT and this year the theme is Ice Planet. The BURN2 sims have been transformed into an ice planet which is set in the future. It’s going to be great fun this year and celebrate once again on the wonderful playa.
Check out the magical and wonderful Christmas at Winter Holiday Village destination in Second Life today because it’s celebrating its 5th winter season on the grid. Go sim-wide ice skating, visit the polar bear pond, penguin park and meet Santa to celebrate the Christmas season. The event runs through until Tuesday 24th December 2013.
It’s a lovely location to visit if you are in the mood for Christmas season currently and it’s a great location to take snapshots of the amazing winter landscape. So far it’s one of the best Christmas villages I’ve visited on the grid and so this becomes my top personal favourite destination.
Check out my Christmas at Winter HolidayVillage snapshots below to see the regions in more detail.

See the reasons to join below and sign up if you are interested in being part of a new opensim grid. The Tangle Grid founders have made a game within a game recently called Pegasus Quest that will be hopefully be open before the end of December 2013 which sounds interesting indeed.

My first snapshot of Tangle Grid and my arrival at the welcome center.
Today I went to visit Brasil Rio Surf in Second Life which is a really cool place to visit I think. There are many great things to do such as attending parties, riding jet skis, wave surfing and much more. I strongly recommend this destination to visit because it’s a great way of hanging out with friends and most importantly having fun. It’s open to everyone!

Today I went to have a sneak preview around the Relay For Life of InWorldz 2013 regions which looks absolutely stunning this year. This weekend coming marks the 2nd annual Relay For Life of InWorldz weekend which will see hundreds of avatars participating in the relay. Inside the relay track this year there is large fairground split over two regions with loads of exciting rides to have fun on.
I’m sure it’s going to be a fun weekend for everyone. Hopefully new records will be set and more people will attend this year to support/donate. I can’t wait!
A new month and a new special episode from the Drax files featuring Creations for Parkinson’s in Episode 13 which is truly inspiring story of Fran Swenson, who is 86 years old suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. Watch the video and find out how Second Life has improved her life over the years. I think anything that helps this cause and stops others suffering from this terrible disease is worth doing to make life easier. Think positive and try things to improve the condition.
Episode 13 details…
My avatar represents how I truly feel inside” says 86-year old Fran Seranade. And despite her Parkinson’s condition she navigates her blond, blue-eyed and stunningly dressed digital alter ego with bravura through the immersive universe of Second Life: one moment she is a mermaid and another she ice skates with her friends in winter wonderland.
The effect of engaging in a virtual world on her condition is being closely studied by her personal doctor and although conclusions can’t be drawn without further research, the exhilaration of being able to engage in activities like horse back riding and boating in SL suggests that so-called mirror neurons are at work here: identifying with the avatar and the action happening on the screen makes Fran’s muscles feel less rigid and increases dopamine production in the brain.
“Second Life just might be the fountain of youth” Fran is saying with a smile and the in-world community “Creations for Parkinson’s” run by her daughter is trying to make this statement a reality by bringing people together to celebrate the power of creativity every day, regardless of age, origin and physical location.”
Watch Episode 13: Creations for Parkinson’s below!
Another amazing episode and it’s got to be the best episode yet of The Drax Files.
Patch Linden sent out closure group notices on Wednesday 30th October announcing that 12 Teen CL Regions will be going offline on Monday 4th November 2013 which is sad news and shocking indeed. As many know the grids merged back on 21st January 2011 and shortly after two groups were formed so that teens could get access to Teen Only sims. The groups were called Chimp Labs and CL Board which were the main groups to join for 2011 transferred teens. It’s unclear why the lab have decided to shut down the regions at this time.
Group Notice From: Chimp Labs, Patch Linden
We are closing the Teen Chimp Labs regions: cereal killers 1, cereal killers 2, Simian, RothLand, Eudaimonia, Building Blocks, Macaque, Erosion, Emperor Tamarin, Gibbon, Mandrill, and Roloway. Please pick up your objects from these regions, they are going offline on Monday, 4 November 2013.
Today marks my official 7th rezday since I first signed up to Second Life which seems so long ago now. It’s been a roller-coaster ride to be honest since 31st October 2006 with many highs and lows at times. I feel like I’ve done everything over the past seven years but I’m sure there will be more exciting adventures for me on the horizon in Second Life in the coming years. I’m really excited and looking forward to future adventures in Second Life/OpenSim.
My first ever snapshot taken on my first day back on 31st October 2006 back on the teen grid when I was 16 years old. In mid-December 2013 marks five years since I transferred from TSL to the Main Grid which is incredible because it only seems like yesterday I transferred between the grids. Wow, so much has changed since then!
Seven achievements that i’m proud off…
Became Group Manager and Estate Manager back in 2007
Became a SL Mentor in 2008
Volunteered with SL birthdays & Burning Man/Life/BURN2 events from 2009+
Became a resident judge for vetting committee for Linden Prize in 2010
Became part of the official SLCC 2010 Twitter team in 2010
It’s official that BURN2 SL 2013 is over for another year and wow it’s been great the past week on the playa. The last of the events finished last night and now everyone can rest for another year knowing that this year was a success. This year I managed to greet new visitors, dance around, explored artist builds and even capturing owl snapshots. We are now into the cool off phrase after the party.
The Press Day event was enjoyable and interesting again this year with many SL bloggers and SL media attending to get a sneak preview of the six regions. The grand opening was very popular and busy this year with hundreds of avatars exploring the regions. I’m glad there is still interest for the annual BURN2 event in Second Life after Linden Lab stopped funding it back in 2010. I do think more needs to done to get the word out to more people on the grid to let them know of this well known event. I think that OpenSim grids should think about hosting BURN2 event because that would be fun and interesting to see what they will come up with.
The Temple Burn
The good news is that the BURN2 regions will remain open until sometime between 11th-15th November 2013 when they will go offline. If you have not visited the sims yet then this is the last chance to do so.
There was a high attendance this year around the playa this year which was good to see and the live music events rocked once again. I thought the burning of Mini-Man, The Man and The Temple were very good indeed this year and different to previous years overall. The balloon trip on greeters gate road was a fun adventure this year because of the nice views you get high up looking over everything. I did notice that lag was much better this year compared with previous ones which made the experience for me better.
