About 18 hours ago or so Rodvik Linden responded to his Quick update post on Last Names saying that he will respond to the issue sometime today more in-depth which is a step forward again I think. Most likely the details will be published on the SL official blog or Rodvik’s SL web online profile page. Stay tuned!

UPDATE
“hey folks, sorry for delay stuff has come up. Just to temper expectations the stuff coming is not going to set the world on fire (or cats) but will help a few folks. The other stuff is really setting up some further discussion as I have rather enjoyed this roundtable stuff.”
This upcoming update today or tomorrow will be interesting to hear about and hopefully we will see a timeline of some sort of when last names will launch officially. I’m glad its being worked on by Linden Lab this year and not abandoned somewhere.

I think that fact that there’s been an enormous response on the Jira – larger and faster than any other Jira – may have had something to do with that.
“polarizing issue”
“impossible to do well”
“another way”
- Implies to me that they’re seeking room to backpeddle on something in this.
It’s not impossible. Simply do what we ASKED for in the FIRST PLACE!
Pull down names list with Other listed. When you pick Other, you get to type in your preferred last name. If the name is already used or otherwise restricted, the website rejects it and waits for more data.
So simple a cave linden can do it…
Show me the lnes in the code that need to be changed and how it is therefore simple.
Above I’m just quoting R Linden selectively.
But be careful about calling something simple just because the -concept- is simple…
