New Interactive Second Life Signup Pages

In the first quarter of 2011 it seems that Linden Lab have redesigned the Second Life signup page again. This time it’s more interactive than before and I think it’s a good direction forward for new residents joining today. I hope the new resident experience improves during 2011 like the old welcome areas being updated with 2011 helpful newbie resources.

Tateru Nino says that..

New signups continue strongly, with roughly 10,000-11,000 per day

New residents have the choice today to go into Basic or Advanced mode when logged into Second Life for the first time. The basic mode needs alot of work to be done to it to make the experience better I think. As many know the new resident experience has changed many times in the past and it will be interesting to see what Linden Lab does during 2011.

  1. It is strangely creepy to see only human avatars.

  2. Daniel Voyager

    @Tateru: I agree. It would be nice to have the choice of humans, furry avatars and tiny avatars included.

  3. I like the new signup pages, I think it creates the right image.

  4. Daniel Voyager

    @Emma: It’s a good start, yes. Better than looking at non-interactive pages like in previous years I guess.

  5. it is a great step, but I feel sorry for the new residents that don’t know that they are only moving that well because of AO’s, and it will not happen for them on log in lol.

  6. The avatar pictured does not look so hot when you walk around as him, at least if he’s the same fellow I used for the Beta version.

    Simple signup will be good but as Edward Castronova wrote in his book Exodus To The Virtual World, “it is a strong norm in the industry to make the first 30 minutes of play an absolutely outstanding experience.”

    If LL wants to “gamify” SL, they’ve got to work on those 30 minutes. Otherwise, there will be little improvement beyond the 10% retention we’ve seen in the past.

  7. Wow, the black female avatar reminds me of my avatar! I’ll have to check it out in the Library folder.

    Thanks for the comments! :)

    Where is the mature avatars with grey hair? It is the Linden Lab Library that determines what avatars are available. The new residents are missing a representative avatar from the segment of the Second Life resident population that is growing in size and age.

  10. I think is a good start in improving the sing-up process, but as some other say, the “only human” avatars is someway decieving…

  11. Reminds me of the Lego Universe avatar selection stage, but with fewer options.

  12. Daniel Voyager

    @Sasy: nods
    @Iggy: Yes, that’s true.
    @GoSpeed: hehe
    @Ethos: Indeed.
    @Raul: There should be a larger section of avs to choose from I think.
    @Uccello: hahahaha
