New Web Based SL Profiles
When reading through today’s SL news feeds I came across folks saying that there are new web-based Second Life profiles. I went to visit my online web SL profile: https://my.secondlife.com/daniel.voyager. You can also view and edit your profile outside of Second Life by visiting https://my.secondlife.com/ followed by your name with a dot for the space to find your Second Life profile online.
There have been no Linden Lab announcements made so far about these new web-based SL profiles. Quickly looking over there now seems to be new badges in the SL name section and there doesn’t seem to be a rez year for the year residents sign up for Second Life. There’s a new bar for profile completeness which sounds familiar to Avatars United last year. You can now Tweet and Facebook the new web-based SL profiles when editing when logged into the website.

if you click “Edit profile” you will be given the opportunity to link your SL profile to your Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin accounts. This is the point of the new “Display Name” – to be able to link your SL account to your real world identity, no doubt for data mining purposes, such as that used by http://spokeo.com .
@Wizard: While I agree data mining is possible, I don’t link to a real world identity, but to a Second Life identity on Facebook and Twitter. Given the privacy concerns with Facebook, I’d recommend everyone be careful with the information you put on any site. To paraphrase Smokey Bear “Only you can prevent the theft of your data”.
I like this. Looks like they took the positive aspects of Avatars United and made SL profiles even better. Starting off to be a good year for Second Life.
@Wizard: Oh right. Thanks.
@Cisop: Let’s hope so. Lot’s of improvements need to be made to this new web-based sl profile already I think. Let’s hope LL will pay attention to residents during the testing/beta phase during early 2011.
Hey great! Now the whole world knows I belong to a Naturist group. I don’t partake in the nudists lifestyle, I just DJ there from time to time. Is there a way to keep groups private on this web profile?
As I see it, the web profile hides the same groups that you set to be hidden in the in-world profile.
@GoSpeed: I can’t see any options to keep groups private on the web-based SL profile.
Holy cow! This makes me concerned for the end of the SL tradition of anonymity enjoyed by sooo many residents over the last seven years. I looked at my profile on the web and everything is there including all groups, picks and classified. I’m not embarrassed by anything, but I think a lot of people could decide to abandon SL when word of this gets around. Just what we need is another excuse for the teetering crowd to fall off the cliff. Surely LL will have to provide a way to opt out.
@Stone: Yeah, it’s going to be interesting how this web-based SL profile experience is going to work out during 2011. I’m sure LL will come up with something to opt out.
I’ve found truly unfair for LL start publishing the whole profile info (incl. rl pic) on a public website. There were (and there will be) some info I want to share only inworld therefore they should make sure you can choose which info can be displayed outside SL. There’s probably something in the TOS we have accepted giving them the right to handle our info as they want, so what will be next step? Posting our real names, addresses and phone numbers?
SL has been publishing online profiles for a long time, they may have updated it, but much of this information is not newly available, it’s always been available online.
RL Pic and info, Partner, Payment Info, Pick’s pictures have never been published in the past, it’s not a simple update (imho) unfortunately.
There’s a JIRA going on about this at:

Thanks for the links and comments.
